I have a bit of cash and I was wondering what is the best singlespeed road bike?

For that matter what is the best or ultimate MTB?

Ultimate = last. So it hasn't been made yet.

There's a really nice steel Specialized Langster for 2010.

I would say this one but with a proper handlebar.

Depends what you mean by 'ultimate', presumably not the literal interpretation that Druidh has suggested.

For me it had to be steel, take decent sized tyres, a rack and full guards, could only find one that matched that, I'm sure you can guess what it is.

Rolf, that bike looks wrong. The rear triangle doesn't suit the rest of the bike.

I keep spending money on those things, but nearly always end up riding my Pompino, so I'd suggest that is the ultimate road bike 🙂

Which, going on the pic I saw, has a threaded steerer. 100% of WTF.

Ok we have the langster, pompino and cotic roadrat so which of these?

As an aside I have applied for £1000 worth of C2W vouchers (Halfords) and was thinking of buying a Boardman team carbon against my SS instincts!

and now I've just bought yet another Pompino, but it is the Ti one, so it must be the ultimate road bike.

How did we get to

langster, pompino and cotic roadrat

On a thread about the ultimate singlespeed road bike?? I love my roadrat but but surely it doesn't quite fall into the ultimate category? I mean, if you took a roadrat and had it built of of 953, surely that would be even ultimaterer..?

a 953 hybrid is still a hybrid.
get one of the best framebuilders in the world to build you a fixed/ss road bike and you have the ultimate.
so that would be vanilla, crumpton, pegoretti, baum etc.

not a misguided fanboy saying "ooh i have a pompino therefore it must be the ultimate because i have one"

I reckon ultimate SS roadbike is the last one you'd part with and the one you ride the most. Anything else is just a shed blocker.

Hence "langster, pompino and cotic roadrat" because these are bikes people enjoy riding.

Most expensive SS roadbike is another thing altogether 🙂

the sunn gt10.

its got history - my father rode it for years as a tourer, it was the best he could afford 35yrs ago, two years before i was born. He upgraded when he had had it for 20yrs and is still riding the Dawes Galaxy 531 sommat or another.
its steel - because back in the day there was only one metal
its rear end is 120mm
its kinda like triggers broom - frame, headset, cranks and centre pull calipers are still original though.
flip/flop hub to appease all you darkside deviants
its the only bike i ride on the road, mostly only to commute as i much prefer the offroad stuff.
it has space for full guards and racks.
The frame is too small for me, its tatty looking (anti theft device?)

It is however the ultimate bike, because i will never ever get rid of it.

I reckon I agree with you!

I do fancy a pompino as I fancy a roadrat. I guess I was talking about an off the peg bike and not a custom build 🙂
