I'm looking for 29er tyres that will cope reasonably with rough fireroad/gravel trail during the second half of my commute yet can be pumped up fairly hard and aren't too knobbly for speed on the tarmac during the first half.

Moon on a stick? Or just Small Block 8s (not on a stick)?

Conti X King spring to mind. Very fast until you hit mossy rock and then they'll kill you dead.

If it's just fireroad/gravel then depending on how rocky it is I maybe wouldn't even go for an MTB tyre. Get some Marathon Extreme's in 700x42c or 700x35c, roll really well on the road and are pretty good for grip on fireroads/gravel. Schwalbe appear to have discontinued them for 2013 but there is stock out there on sale still.

round our way burnside, I find ignitors roll well on the road and excellent on gravels. Ive got one you can borrow.

Also got a spare Racing ralph 2.4 and a pair of SB8s too if you want to do some try outs.

Hope family's well.

Hey M! Cheers for the offer. I've got an Ignitor on the Soul (26") but have wondered about longevity on the road?

For family, and whether I'll be in a position to borrow tyres, see my thread posted a couple of days ago...

Say hi to R and gang.

Cyclo cross tyres should do the job.

I only have experience of Schwalbe CX pros in 26 and 29 but they are great on the road and excellent in mud. Should be perfect for you.
