[Closed] Turner 5 spot Raw finish. Have you got one? Any problems?

[#3388440]

Just took advantage of CRC's mega cheap 5 spot offer. The bike is now built up.(Probably the most shonky components ever to be put on a Turner!)

But i'm a bit dubious about the raw (re: un-painted) finish.

Do you have one?
What does it look like after a bit of use?
Have had any problems with it?

Just been out for a evening ride and the frame now has a polished bit where my battery case has rubbed on the top tube!

Should I try and polish it? If so any tips on what to use?

Sorry for all the questions but hope someone can help!

I have a raw and love it. All raw frames from now on.
I now look at scratches and smile, you can clean it up with scotchbrite but I don't bother. I like it dull and industrial.
Put some heli tape in areas showing rub maybe a good idea.

Just watch salt spray if you are transporting it outside the car in the winter. My frame suffered a bit as I lazily never cleaned it after transporting on a tow bar rack 😯

Raw is absolutely teh BEST paint finish I've ever had.

Scratches? No problem...

Cable rub? No problem...

Paint chips? No problem...

Chain slap? No problem...

Lean your bike against a lamppost? No problem...

Marks on the frame from the car bike rack? No problem...

Mates lean their bikes up against mine? No problem...

If your battery pack's rubbed a small polish area - forgettaboutit! Wherevr you clamp things to a raw frame it'll do that.

I took advantage as well and still waiting for a couple of bits to finish the build. I must say I agree with what others have said. The Raw looks amazing and will only get better 🙂

Just got a raw flux. Its quite dark up front with a lighter rear end.Its dirty, stained, scuffed, brushed, scratched and RAW as a raw thing. Love it!

Spent all last week trying to decide between raw or charcoal......went with charcoal in the end which turned up yesterday and looks amazing. However I'm sure I'd have been just as happy with the raw - just would have required a different state of mind with small knocks, scraps etc. Enjoy your bike!! 🙂

Raw frame for almost a year. Still looks ace. Please DO NOT polish it. Polished frames look utter guff. My roof rack leaves a 'shiny' spot on the down tube, but it's usually covered in mud.

This it a year old. Raw still looks exactly the same now.

Hey Coogan.

Looking at swapping out my RP23 for a coil as soon as I can. What are you running on yours?

Elliot, coogans looks like a Dhx to me.
I have fox van RC and it does the job perfectly well and is a massive improvement over the rp23.

Yeah, like wrecker said, it's a DHX4 with a Ti spring. I've always been a sucker for coil shocks. Plus they look cooler. 8)

Raw/polished 2009 spot.
Cleaned with industrial handwipes, keeps it slightly shiny.
Fox Van RC with Ti coil.

@ Toons; not tempted by the 2012 spot?
Do I need to get saving up?

Well the raw is growing on me, i'm not massivley into keeping my bike looking spotless (no pun intended) So i suppose the raw suits me.

What does impress me is the ride. Jesus that bike is fast downhill! Two night rides now and very pleased. In my opinion its no way worth £2000 but for £799 i think its an absolute bargin.

I must say though i keep on thinking about polishing it. Aluminium is not as stable as other materials which are left raw (titanium) so im sure it would be best to have some sort of protection.

i.e. Polish it then wax it.

I might give it a couple of months in the raw and see how i feel.

Raw frames have lots and lots of benefits but only one drawback.

They look shite!

Looks terrible., done for the car parks. Best left raw. I'd never even consider a painted frame again. It would have to be ano at least but even that doesn't look any where near as good as raw.

I think the polished finish looks nice. I'm going to leave it for now and see how it looks after a winter of hard use.

This bike is going to get some abuse!

Raw is awesome. Don't polish the raw though as it will look utter guff. Like some Halfords/Walmart special.

I think raw finishes look awesome.

Polished bikes just make me think of mid-90s Zaskars, and I never liked them.

errr.......rubbish

to be fair it would make sense (especially on low volume productions like turner as opposed to knocked out every 30 seconds stuff) to put the neatest stuff into the "raw" finish line. Nicer aesthetic result for minimal effort, and we are talking about a company that will warranty stuff for very minor cosmetic defects (see Hora).

That 951 has made me revise my opinion on polished frames. It looks awesome.

It will now forever look like an abused polished bike but not a raw bike.

I'd say the most honest welds. There is a reason I paint most things I weld 😳

I've got a Raw flux - bought it on price and availability but have grown to love it. I have copter taped the most abused areas which feels like a weird thing to have done!
