Cheap bike off ebay. Second hand turbo trainer off ebay.
Put in cellar. Solve problem of not getting out enough.
What could possibly go wrong? No, seriously, what could possibly go wrong.
Advice please ladies and gents?
Any suggestions for turbo trainers to look out for? Particular brands etc? Not looking for bells and whistles, just something that works.

You don't need another bike! Get a cheap Tacx or Elite. And a big fan. Easy.

But if you do, then essentials for turboing are:
Don't do it when mentally tired
Have a session planned with variation
Better done with a few folk together
Music. LOUD music.
Training dvds
A fan helps with cooling.
Lift the front wheel to the same height as the rear.
Not really essentials, any of those. Some are quite the opposite.
I consider them essentials! Turbo is boring as hell.

At about a fiver a go.... it would have worked out cheaper for me, so far this yea,r to go to them twice a week.
The cheap bike idea was just so I could leave it set up in the cellar, lazy you see 😉
Music and a mind set that allows you to turn off from the world and just get on with it.
Although the latter only comes after several years of intense Jedi training
I have a DVD and TV set up so I can watch The Big Bang Theory to stave off boredom. It works!
Get the front wheel up, and have a fan handy.
Seen a Tacx for £50 on ebay. Do you need the specific tyre or will any slick do?
Consensus seems to be I'll need something for the front wheel as well.

any smooth tyre will do, pumped right hard.
Only thing that can go wrong is that you don't use it because it's so mind numbing.
Worth looking at the sufferfest videos. That's something incredibly motivational about being taunted by some sarcastic subtitles.
I have a single speed permanently set up on a taxc trainer - it's virtually silent. A thick rubber mat helps to keep the noise and any vibration down as well. You'll need some cheap towels to soak up all the sweat.
A turbo tyre isn't necessary, but it will run quieter, smoother and you won't wear out your tyres needlessly. Cheap towels +1

you won't wear out your tyres needlessly
Turbos don't wear tyres out. I've used the same cheap smooth tyre for about 7 years. And I turbo lots and hard.
"getting the front wheel up"...Ive never done this...does it make a difference?
Cheap being the important word. It will wear out good quality tyres with decent rubber compounds - I have experience of this.
most important is the fan and an open window in my experience!
I wanted a bike specifically for the turbo so put a wanted ad on freecycle, had a reply but didn't want to be too cheeky asking what it was, went to pick it up and the guy wheeled out a nice Cannondale R500, tidy!
I have an mtb sized conti turbo tyre that I no longer need now that I have a road bike, will sell it cheap if anyone is looking for one. Think it's 26x1.75.
Laptop, sufferfest, fan, yellow pages, lots of water and a towel. Sorted.
Can't reccomend trainerroad.com enough if you have any ant+ enabled sensors
Got cheap 2nd bike on free turbo from mate.
wrong location - needs to be in front of TV. Mines in living room. I found cateye rear with cadence a great solution to maintaining a good rpm.
Mate failed because he could only have it setup in garage and went mad looking at the garage door 🙂
