Right, so went down pretty hard today, blind drop, a good few feet, landed in just the wrong off camber spot, rear tyre burped and go jack-knifed over the front.

It's not the first time either, each time ive blamed the setup and moved onto something else.

Now, my options are -

- Stick a tube in
- Run higher pressures
- Run even burlier tyres
- Go back to wire bead tyres

Setups tried -

Wheels - flows, lots of extra layers of tape
Conti rubber queens UST (current setup)
HR2 exo
Nobby nic evo
Minion single ply wire bead (ive had the most success with)

All the tyres ive tried, ive burped until i put about 34psi in, a little less in the minions, so i've either had to run the risk of burping or a tyre with no grip that gets pinged about.

So im sort of eyeing up a set of hans dampf super gravities, too much for a "trail" bike? Im pretty sure these will solve my burping/traction/not getting pinged about issues, but worried they'll be like strapping lead weights on my bike.

What are people reckoning?

34psi us about right, minimum pressure for riding a MTB hard.

Anything softer and the tyre rolls, burps and the sidewalks collapse.

Especially if you are a heavier rider (weigh more than 12 stone)

Extra layers of tape can mean the tyre doesn't engage onto the rim as well- it's easier to seal up in the first place but that doesn't always mean it's going to work better.

That's basically the only suggestion I've got though. Oh, I don't think wire bead is better for tubeless, I think it's just down to the bead of the individual tyre rather than what it's made of.

"proper" ust rims have a little ridge to engage the bead and I suppose they retain it at least a little bit. Any chance you could get a groovy rim-strip in there ?

I'd say the Supergravity are great for stability and not burping. With the SG Magic Mary on the front I was out riding for 4 hours, a few big jumps and lots of corners. I got back, noticed the tyre was a bit low but it rode fine. It actually only had 14psi in it. I'd sway I'm quite an aggressive rider as well.

Stans lay the tape starting from the opposite side of the valve and overlap by around 15cm. No need to put any more tape on.

Make sure its clean when you install it and dont flatten it by hand. Put the tyre on and then inflate with a tube to make it seat.

As above, too much tape might be the issue.

How much do you weigh with full gear?

My stans flow 29er with nobby nics or Hans dampfs have been flawless.

The UST Rubber Queens are great tyres (I've been running them on my hardtail for a while) but the carcass is quite flexible despite being UST tough, plus they're quite big volume so easier to burp unless they're on a very wide rim - I haven't managed it but I don't land big jumps let alone big jumps hard off camber! The Protection versions are quite a lot stiffer - I had them front and rear on my 27.5 full-sus until I put a Super Gravity Magic Mary on the front.

I haven't used dual-ply tyres on a bike but that SG carcass feels like a motorbike tyre compared to a reinforced single-ply. Incredibly stiff and strong feeling. I haven't noticed a vast increase in rolling resistance sticking the SG MM on the front - it doesn't feel as unpleasant as putting a super tacky single-ply Swampthing up front. I'm running the pressure down at 18psi where I'd have had the front Trail King at 25psi.

i thought half the point of tubeless was to run low 20s pressure?

UST RQ's on Arch EX. 18 psi front & 25 psi rear. 13.5 stone kitted up and havent had any problems with burping however stick to 2 foot jumps and under !

Im typically 12.5 stone.

Will most probably just give the super gravities a go, i think compliant tyres are really important, more important than suspension IMO.

Plus really liking how much i dont have to give a damn on my DH bike, with DH tyres even at about 22psi landing really, really sketchy.

I run SG dampfs on my Zesty and they are OK. You certainly notice the weight and rolling resistance compared to the Nics i have on my other set of wheels, but it ain't too bad. Yeah, you wouldn't want to turn up to an XC race meet with them on, but for generally use, if you're reasonably fit, they are fine ๐Ÿ˜‰
