I have a friend who wants a biggish bike for the alps, uplift days, mega, UK DH etc and he wants a Scratch 7.
I think an SX trail will be better as it is more proven and gets rave reviews.

What do the STW nassive think?

SX trail - longer and lower, but heavier frame. brilliant bike, but I would NEVER ever want to pedal one up hill

Scratch - a little bit more upright and shorter top tube for the size, I havent ever ever pedalled one up hill, but the one I rode felt more capable of doing so than an SX trail.

I wouldn't worry too much about the SX being 'proven' as the scratch uses the same suspension as the 88 and the remedy, both of which people love.

think it may just come down to price or looks if I was choosing again.

I've ridden the old style SX trail ('08 version) and while heavy at 40lb ish it does climb very well for a heavy bike. Incredible amount of grip over rocky stuff. The 4 bar suspension does allow you to stand up and pedal with not too much bob if you're smooth. The new ('09) SX Trail frame is about 1.5lb heavier but I think the suspension is the same set up.

Not tried the trek, but the guys at my LBS who test rode the remedy were raving about the suspension, claiming it was better than the Spesh 4 bar.

It's gonna be down to which fits better / better spec for the money / what you think after a test ride on both

The Scratch is super-short... The medium frame has a 21.9" effective top tube.

Go with the SX Trail or a Reign X.

I have the SX and it will climb but you have to be determined to get to the top. I did quite a lot of climbing with mine in the Alpes last year, very capable bike when descending fast, very sure footed and jumps v well.

New SX lookg good. Kevin has the old SX and pedals it up hill slowly in the Alps but its ace on the downhills. He is slow on uphills on any thing though

Don't let the frame size number fool you. A 19.5" feels nicely sized for me (6ft1) and still lots of space with the saddle down for jumping.
