So - looks like I got in to do the transportugal. Not sure I'm that happy about it. Any advice for a first time stage racer taking on this biblical race? Training programmes, equipment, logistics?? Any advice from the STW massive greatly appreciated. I'm on a mission to download as much info as I can before setting out my training goals.
PS - is it worth paying for a single room and bike wash/service?
Not done it myself, but here's a report I remember reading from last year.
I seem to remember a GPS is essential, as the route is given out as a GPX rather than being waymarked. Would be worth checking though in case my memory fails me...
Done it .. it was awesome!!
A GPS is essential as the race route is virtual so no physical markings on the ground... from being a non GPS user I had the flow of it after a few hours.
Start getting lots of long steady rides in and start building your endurance base.. you might already be super fit but it won't hurt.. some very long days in the saddle.. think they still have the back to back near 100mile stages I did when I was there.
It really is an amazing race... start sending out the emails now and track down anymore UK guys to save paying single room supplement... would suggest bike wash and definately massages.
This is my experience..

Thanks guys - have read Yardley Hastings post a number of times.
Paul - not super fit but have a base to start from - havent raced this year (new family) but most weekend rides are 5hrs long and have managed a number of 20plus hr training weeks over the summer. That being said its the back to back nature of the event that haunts me. Will be aiming on a few training weekends taking in 3 back to back 6hr days in order to get used to the days in the saddle. Any other suggestions?
