Unable to book on line for a bike is it a case of going to a booking office and booking?
If you use Virgin East Coast web site you can book your ticket and reserve space for bikes.
I sit on that train a lot, not many if any bike slots, would get it confirmed before you travel.

Enjoy the capital trail, I've got that bookmarked for September this year although I live 3km from the start so could do it anytime.
When you finish, I highly recommend some victory beers in the Dalriada, just along the prom towards Joppa. Cracking pub in old victorian mannor, right on beach with beer garden. Nice selection of ales.
