Anyone had/ridden both?
How do they compare?
Both are good bikes.
Which 456 are you considering? Steel, Carbon or Titanium?
Did you know that a 29er TransAm is coming soon?
I've owned a steel and a Ti 456 and I've ridden a Transition Transam.
I'd go for the Transam. When you ride it you get a better all round vibe. It's more poised, more balanced, instantly engaging and has zip to it, despite being a similar weight to a steel 456. Much more chuckable, feels way more secure on the downs.
The only downside I could see with the Transam was the way the rear dropouts work.
The geometry on the Transitions is sorted!
We've been demo-ing a Bandit recently and it's totally dialled in.
Not much to call between the build kits at similar price points.
Have you been able to arrange a test ride on either of them?
To be slightly more precise.........
The 456 is long and has a tall bottom bracket and a low front end. That means that you are 'arse up/head down' all the time and if you want to get out over the back of the saddle for steep downs it presents more of a problem and makes the bike feel insecure. It sticks you in that roadie-type position and I found it difficult to move about on it when you were riding constantly engaging trails. I was never wholly at one with either of my 456s when descending. That even extends to when I stopped and dropped the saddle, probably because of the higher centre of gravity.
The Transam has a more balanced/level seat to bar relationship and is not so long. It feels more like a Pace, and more like my personal preference. When you first get on it, the bike yells at you, "Let's go". The On One doesn't do that, although I have to say that the Ti456 was probably faster, but the frame also broke which is not good.
456s are probably better at getting over rockeries, streams, straight line obstacles.
They are both good fun in their own way
i had a inbred which was SS or alfine11'd with a 140 talas on t'front but it was stolen (not insured).
so i just wondered on the difference between the two.
TBH I was waiting for the inbred to break 😉 to give me the excuse to get something tougher 😀
So, while not a happy ending the TransAM looks like it's just the ticket, 150mm upfront, steel, bulletproof. TBH I even like the look if the dropouts. Can run it SS if I want to - yay!
if you fancy a trans am frame give me a shout, i've just ordered a load from surf and can give you them at £395.
sorry for the plug.
Sancho, can't see an email address in your profile so, out of curiosity, what website would I need to visit or shop to contact regarding these frames?
Crotch..not getting nervous about your choice are you.......its too late 😉
An old man on a TransAM. Great frame 36's work a treat, its a heavy build but I did the Tour of Ben Nevis recently on it and it was a lot
more comfy than my Stiffy I had before. My friend has a 456 I would say his frame is lighter. Sorry not what you asked for its my tuppenceworth
flyingfox bikes in scotland are doing banging deals on TransAMs and maybe other 2011 Transitions too.
