โ€œNo carbon wheels for me, for security sake, they need to last all weekend. Iโ€™ve got carbon wheels on my road bike because Colin doesnโ€™t know. Heโ€™d take them from me if he found out.โ€

Yes it did make me chuckle especially after hearing someone who gets them for free running out of sets racing down here.

If it was a plastic bike I'd be skeptical too....but it's metal with massive welds, it'll be doing sterling service long after I've moved onto other bikes.

I'll do an offer, I'm at the Cwmcarrn Enduro in March, if anyone wants to cast an eye over the bike and even use their own scales I'm open to that?

Shouldn't be too difficult to spot me, there can't be that many X-fusion suspended Trances around.

I've seen a lot more cracked or outright bent alu mainframes than I have seen carbon.

I've seen someone bend an aluminium Giant Glory so much that it probably had a 45 degree head angle. ๐Ÿ˜€

I'm sure the shop will weigh it for you...
I've just done the bathroom scales job on the Nomad I've just built
[img] [/img]
Float 36
Reverb
Flow EX Wheels on Hope
Hope Floating Rotors and M4 Up front XT on the back, Alu bars
GX 1x11 and Standard (not even Ti SDG) and Mallet DH pedals

It's 23lb!!
Only joking it's 33lb
So you got to 28lb
Thats the Dropper, Wheels, Carbon Bar pedals anything else I missed?

I reckon that covers it, I intentionally went with 34mm stanchion trail forks instead of Fox-36s, I've negated a dropper on all but by most XC type rides, alloy bars?....no thanks. Floating rotors and Hope four piston brakes are always going to outweigh a set of XTs....your point being you've built a heavy bike, well done you.

I know but if I could borrow your luggage scales it would be 22lb ๐Ÿ˜‰

.your point being you've built a heavy bike, well done you.

The point being I could get that down to your 28lb by your maths there 1lb for the dropper, 1/2lb for the saddle, 1lb on the wheels, 1/2 on the pedals then brakes and finishing another lb? ๐Ÿ™‚
Point might be nobody can quite work out why you have gone ultra light for gravity with little pedalling.

Anyway I'm off to take it away for a weekend of smashing steep fun runs off a shuttle, might lighten is a bit for EWS but not much.

For balance I have th same frame running carbon wheels, revs and xt 1x11' its set up tubeless with nobby nic evos. It does have a dropper though and no carbon bars.

Weighs a tad over 28lbs with pedals. Cant see how yours is 2lb lighter to be honest.

Nice build though..whats the ha like with a 160 fork?

Yellow bikes are always heavier. All the ones we've had always felt that way. The 2017 Enduro in the garage feels heavier than the 2016 that's at the side of it so it must be the colour. Everyone knows that black ones are the lightest

Good luck with the EWS ๐Ÿ˜€

HA is 66 degrees with a 160mm fork.

Can we put the 26lb thing to bed now, I cocked up....when I did my combined weight with bike on scales and then subtracted my bodyweight I got 28lb which is more realistic.

Tech 3 E4's that my old man had were actually lighter than SLX's! There isn't much between Xts and SLX brakes.

This is a 2012 Tech M4, it makes the XT seem weightless but it works a treat still for a lot more front end control.

Does it have braided hoses? Get rid of those and you'll save yourself circa 40-50g each end.

๐Ÿ˜›

I say it, because I've always had a thing for Hope V series brakes - I've been eyeing a set of V4s and worked out that they really aren't that bad of a weight without the braided hose. I'm actually a bit confused as to why Hope insist on selling what could be an even more popular downhill brake and a competitive enduro brake, if they just got rid of the bloody braided hose.

Again, I'm at the Cwmcarrn Enduro next month, BPW on the 9th and FoD on the 1st March.....forum members are welcome to cast their eye over it and weigh it themselves.
Can't say fairer than that.

1) santa cruz ain't a boutique bike brand, haven't been one for years, they're just expensive

2) why wouldn't a giant frame weigh less? they are better at manufacturing, materials and have more money for RnD.

I weighed all my bikes while I was at it and now I don't feel so bad..
Orange 5 31.4lb
Canyon dude 31lb
Anthem 26.8lb OK this should be lighter as it has 26" wheels. So thats less rubber and less rim and shorter fork legs.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But then I reckon my scales are wrong as canyon quote 29.26lb

Yup. Giant have always struck me as the Repsol Honda of the MTB world, my aluminium reign seems as burly as any other bike it is category. Yet the damn thing weighs no more than many carbon frames.

Without pedals and included reflectors.

I'm still trying to work out if aphex_2k lives in a shipping container.

Nope, that's a FENCE in the background, not a shipping container.

It's actually an asbestos fence, as lots are in Australia. Painted with concrete paint which has a kind of plastic coating effect.

IDNLIASC*

*(I do not live in a shipping container)

I am tempted to weigh my bike though!

EDIT: 29.2lb.

Haha.

More than likely.

My friends old Trance Advanced weighs more than that with a higher end build.

Must be the lead lined dropper posts ๐Ÿ™‚

FWIW, my Fuel still weighs just under 26lbs, with 29" wheels & a dropper post. I'll race DH & enduro on it all year ๐Ÿ˜‰

Giant Trance SX is 29.8 lbs standard. It comes with own brand AM2 wheels that weigh 2.35kg and a connect dropper at 617 grams. Swapping those out should easily save a pound and a half.

Anyway...I think the bike looks great. Got to love a quality polished alloy frame.

Possibly, but it won't make the OPs bike any lighter will it?

Why not?
If Giant themselves list the SX as 29.8lbs and I've ditched the dropper, fitted carbon bars, carbon saddle and fitted lighter wheels then it's entirely possible I've dropped a few pounds off the standard SX weight.

This isn't rocket science.

why not?

Because your starting point isn't that stock build weight, and you can't just take weight off and then not consider the parts you added that put weight on.

Just to add..

The stock trance 2015 27.5 1 you've worked from is 29.5lbs with carbon rims, XT cranks, nobby nic evo tyres and fox suspension.

You've swapped out the wheels, (no idea if they are lighter than the originals but don't assume much difference if any), swapped out the suspension for x fusion which will be a bit heavier, gone from XT to SLX cranks, gone bigger on the cassette and fitted heavy DH tyres.

You've also swapped bars and seat for carbon versions, remove 1 chainring, 1 front mech and shifter, and a dropper. And you've added pedals which don't get included in stock weight.

My guess is a zero sum gain.

I made my trance heavier when modding it but it made it a better bike for my needs.

Just weighed my 2012 Orange 5 with pedals on because I need them to actually ride it. I also have a dropper on it along with a wireless computer, a neoguard, a crudcatcher and Slime inner tubes as I hate punctures.
It has aluminium bars, XT 1x11, Hope pro 2 wheels with Mavic XM719 wheels and Revelation 150mm air forks.
It weighs 30.8lb if that is important to anyone.

Deviant, are you Professor Denzil Dexter of Fast Show fame? He had an amazing ability to create numbers for whatever he needed.

Nice bike by the way. Have you considered a lighter frame and components?

I've had a few Giant aluminum frames and they can come in very light.

That said, 26lbs is pure wishful thinking and 28lbs still seems a touch optimistic.

You realise you are going to need to get it weighed in a lab now, or this is going to haunt you forevermore.

What wheels does it have?

As already said I have a trance one running 1x11 and tubeless and I just rewighed it on my pretty accurate scales...

It weighed 28.2/bs with m520 pedals

Take off the dropper post and replace forks with burlier ones (i hve no idea why you'd not run a dropper but thats by the by) as the OP has done and the weight would be roughy the same. Equally the stock tyres may have been replaced by heavier vesrions but hes probably lost the same in adding lighter bars and a ridiculously uncomfy saddle

Whilst I was very dubious that it weighed 26lbs, 28lbs seems believable to me

for reference, on same scales my yeti ascr weighs 24lbs
