So, I’m going to try and take my very energetic dog cycling up on the Downs. He’s got great recall but conscious for some stretches, dogs have to be on a lead (livestock etc).
So if you do this, what lead do you use and how do you avoid being pulled off if the dog gets over excited!
I use this and take the bungee lead only.

Our Peg is off lead 99% of the time but we are on-lead riding, we take it v. easy
I just use a normal lead but hold it by one finger, which operates like a quick release. If she stops or pulls suddenly, we break away form each other.

I don't think the type of lead is so important. Probably the type they're used to is best, but it needs to be a good length so that if they cross in front of you, there's enough length to allow that without pulling across the front of the bike.
Never, ever hold the lead AND the bars.
It only takes a tiny pull, your bars turn and you're off.
Always ride one handed and try to keep a bend in your arm so as to absorb any sudden pull.
I always drop my saddle too for the relatively short bits of on lead I do with Harold. You can be going along fairly gently but a sudden stop for a wazz or an interesting sniff can cause issues so having your saddle lower helps with this.
If I'm doing a tricky bit of narrow multi user path or there is potential other dog aggro, I'll wind the lead around my hand a bit and keep him close.
Always ready to just drop it though.
Where we go to the park, the path is alongside a fairly busy road. My gf didn't spot one of Harold's problem dogs on the other side of the road, he lurched into the road and took her with him (she's not a radical bicycle operator/enthusiast like myself) but luckily the lights were on red and the traffic still. 😳

The thing I cannot seem to train out is his tendency to run right under my front wheel And bark his blummin head off at me almost non stop.
He's constantly looking round at me waiting for me to put the hammer down.
This is my fault really I guess as I always tend to have bits round the park that are basically mini dh runs and I peg it down them and he gets crazy excited.
So he's always waiting for the exciting break of speed.
Not a hope in hell I can catch him when he goes though 😊
