I just been out for a pootle with Paddy the Parsons russell for his first run with the bike , Bloody brilliant Certainly beats walking the dog .
it started off a bit tense with him on the extendable lead on a back road with him not knowing just where he should be when cars came past
but after a while he got the hang of running just on the left about 2 mtres in front , I was just ambling along at his brisk walking pace when he seemed to notice he could run and I could keep up so I let him set the pace .
Then on to the canal bank where he could come off the lead and he loved it . he would sprint off and stop as if to say come on then .
then it was a small road climb back to our house and he went back on the lead and creamed me on the climb , 4.5 miles he ran/ trotted most of the way and still insisted on playing around for 20 mins in the garden.
The little beggar is only 9 months old is that to far for a pup
it never fazed him at all .
any tips form you other trail dog owners . as we are both hooked it was great.
Good stuff trout,my dogs been coming out with me for around 6 years now. You say your dogs only 9 months, you should take it easy up until they are around 2 years old! There bones and joints are still developing and you can damage them if you push them to hard. If your dogs short legged it will need to work even harder to keep up. Remember dogs will run themselves into the ground trying to follow you.
I would keep doing what your doing, but maybe shorter regular runs until there up to speed and a bit older. Also, remember give them water and food on longer runs. Keep it up though, you wont find a better riding buddy than a trail hound, come sun, rain or snow there always up for it. I don't think I will be taking my dog on longer runs after she is 9, its not fair even though there hearts still in it. I will still take her out local runs though.
All the best on your trail hound adventures and just ignore the dog haters, there plenty on here, sad people.
i have two springers who love to go running with us,, we also go open water swimming with them,, but have yet to try cycling,, they are both a little weary of the bikes in the kitchen ,,
is it best to start off the lead in a large open area?
Lets see some pics of him then.
Great innit?! Only tip I can think of - when it's hot make sure there's water for him to jump in and cool off somewhere on the ride.
Oh yeah, if you ever lose the dog, don't hang around too long waiting/looking for it - they always seem to find their way home!
Can't wait till i can take the new family member (rhodesian ridgeback) out on the trails with me.Still far to young to go out yet(he's only 13 weeks old).Up to now i'm getting him used to being around the bike. And that bloody pro2 hub :D.The breeder said the same as sherry above as in no long distances untill he's two years old.
We got one of these for Pip, saves pulling on her neck.
hats off to the hound
Small dogs apparently don't need as much 'running in' as bigger dogs, so should be fine running mad at 9 months.
To be honest I don't buy into this not letting your dog run at an early age stuff. both puppies i've had(rather folks had) over the years would run 6 miles to every one you walked with them, if you sensibly up the pace they don't go any harder it's just that the ratio of miles traveled, human to dog, drops a lot.
We just got a Parson's pup yesterday (Eddie), cracking little dog, 8 weeks, can't wait to get him out and running about!
Cheers fellow mtbdog owners
only pic I have is an ooh puppy one

will try for a trail pic next time out .
I dont know about pushing him it was him who set the pace he seemed happy to be able to run and the slow human could keep up with him .
I will certainly be riding with him again .
This thread needs more pics
Sherry - I don't think many people on here hate dogs.
Dogs owned by irresponsible people who can't or won't control them so they end up biting people - yes. Dogs in general - maybe the odd nutter but not many.
Got to ask anyone go out in the dark riding with their canine buddy
been out walking and need to fit him with a blinky on his collar to keep track of him as he seems to go off chasing shadows
We get on really well with one of these harnesses. Just a anti-pull one for about 12quid. Did just go with the normal collar for a while, but feel more in control with the harness.
As for night riding - definitely! It's great. Couple of very short videos (old Ixus, zip tied to the bars!)
