Note to self sort out a bike for this....if only I was tons size i would be able to buy the one he is currently speccing just before this trip happens I could bring the 29er - and put some semi-slick tyres on it?

Do we have agreed routes yet? I'd like to get the GPX files if so.

I have a road bike but no touring bike or CX bike- probably just bring that as I assume the "off road " stuff is gentle as can be

Its a kind offer but ,hopefully, I wont need to take you up on it.

no gpx, no route profile, just good old fashioned fun, that a fat bloke on a behemoth of a tourer can manage with 42c tyres, and full guards. slowly mind!!

OK- just tell me the routes then. I'm happy to create a GPX file for those after one.

Just an idea for folk but the forest road sections from Glen Trool to Clatteringshaws may be heavily cut up at the moment due to forestry work/wood lorries used to clear the area of Larch die back disease so a 28mm tyre at the least would be needed, if i'm up that way on the Tripster i tend to use my 40mm Clement MSO as it's perfectly fast enough on the roads and gives a bit of comfort on the forest roads - the other roads are the usual mixture of rough rural surfaces (some bad, some very rough, some butter smooth) so a 28mm treaded tyre at the minimum would be preferable.

For practically all my riding throughout this area whether that be road or off road tracks/forest roads/paths i fit my Clement X-Plor USH , I'm not fussed about how fast or beating previous times though so my advice may be tarn with a pinch of salt.

(apologies for always bleating bout clement tyres but i've found them to be perfect for my type of riding in this area)

Sorry, Ton, someone had to.
Marathons will have to do me.

Marathons will do you absolutely fine chipster - plenty of volume for cushioning, you might have to take it easy on some of the big forest road descents though.

What? So I'll have to go slow down 'em as well? 😕

Thanks SF, easy it is, then.

Nah…bugger it….just **** hoon it down them….every bike tour with mates needs a near death escape and if it involves a fully laden 40 ton wood lorry and a massive 8 wheeler wood harvesting machine then all the better - you'll be total legend! 😀

OK. I think these are the routes ..

Day 1 - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/636593116
Day 2 - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/636596886

I've got 28mm Marathons on the Amazon at the moment so might opt for those, or some 35mm Maxxis Raze CX tyres. Hey, I might even do a tyre swap on the Saturday night 😉

I also found this Newton Stewart house on google streetview. I reckon we should all go round for a nosey

Ton,saw this post a few weeks back.I've just realised I've got the Friday off from work which means I can drive up from West Lancs Friday & stay Fri / Sat night so if there's a place left I'll take it.
I'll bring my Halfords http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/psa-halfords-cx-bargain-250 bargain CX bike!

If you're serious, I think I've got a pair of 29er wheel with rim brake surfaces. Still not sure if we're going to make this, would very much like to come but Mrs NBT's having some trouble with her legs at the moment 🙁

Busta I am heading up from Lancs so we may be able to share a lift

NBT I may be serious depends on how trough it actually is as basically I have a road bike or an Orange 5 or a SS.

All looking good to me. I suppose I'd better remind my legs what hills are, I've only been riding the flatlands since December.

Junkyard, the offer of my 29er still stands. I have some spare CX tyres or 1.75" Marathon Mondials that would fit.

All this talk of tyres on road bikes is putting me off. How much 'offroad' is there exactly? I was banking on taking a basic Spesh Allez (cos that's the only roadie type bike I possess) Or should I HT it???

There's about 8 miles of forest road cycle route 7 from Clatteringshaws to Loch Trool - that is all - nothing else so don't get worried. but as this is a forest road it can often get rather cut up by forestry vehicles and weather - Last november i had a warm showers guest staying for a couple of days and i plotted him a 100m+ route through the best of Galloway (he was used to massive adaux's so 100m was easy for him) and it included the section above - he was on 25mm road tyres fitted to a Genesis CDF and found that section very rough/stony in sections and quite cut up in places but as long as he took it real slow he was ok - apart from the punctures :(.

He loved the route btw but said he would definitely have preferred larger section tyres for the forest road, and for most of the roads to be honest.

Can only do the Sat @ at push, working @ 6pm!
I fancy coming along after work Fri, riding Sat just to meet y'all and Ton who I've not seen since a ride at Kirby Thingy organised by a former STWer who has since passed away, D-Jay 😥
came across an e-mail when I was arranging to meet him and his mates over in Osmotherly the other day which reminded me of Ton and that wet day we met!! 😐
If I plan it right I can be there for around 8. But! My old man isn't keeping well atm so will need to be a last min decision.

Hi all.. I'll be ridin my disc Shand stoater with marathon racer tyres... But could bring either, or both, of the following spare bikes for people who want something a bit more rugged than a std road bike

Both size med.
Singular swift, fully rigid, flat bars, 10sp.
Charge filter cross bike, discs, file tread cross tyres but could put something narrower on. Actually, this is a small... But feels like a med. Could easily run a smaller stem for someone shorter.

I'm 5'8"
