Can someone please explain how the national designations are determined with Tour teams? I always thought that BMC was a Swiss team and that BMC as a company was Switzerland based, but I see on the TdF website that it is American. Even its owner is Swiss.

Is it just a matter of where they train?

Sorry for the ignorance.

The BMC Racing Team is a United States-registered UCI WorldTour team sponsored by BMC Switzerland.

The team and the sponsor are separate entities.

Teams are teams looking for their next sponsor.
So when you set up team Saxonrider it will only be called Saxonrider until say for instance Analsol come along with some cash and then you will be team Analsol.

When Analsol "pull out" you will be team Saxonrider until someone else fills the hole left by Analsol.

That is a very helpful example, Speshpaul. Except that it's spelled 'Anusol'. Or so I've heard.
