This is the most likely scenario. Cav had to sort himself out a bit given how technical the finish was so Morkov was trying to lead him out and Cav couldn;t quite catch his wheel until the last metres.
Morkov would have been a bit unpopular I think had he mis-timed things 🙂

Morkov was canny enough to keep riding to deny anyone else points for second place. Great teamwork.

He won stages mostly through time trials, didn’t he? I know those are truly solo efforts… but it is a team sport, and Cav has shown he has the racing brain to win (stages) in the field more than anyone else ever has (when part of the right team).
It's been a breathtaking performance from Deceuninck, they are absolutely monstering it in the lead outs.

I think it's just an old man being a bit churlish about his record being matched & perhaps fearful of it being broken. I'm not a massive fan of his (Half man - Half bike is a great read mind & gives a good record of his achievements) but he was pretty tight with Armstrong & for that I didn't like him much. This lack of grace just makes that little more unlikable IMHO..

I love Cav but the reality is Mercx is by far the better cyclist and winner, 34 tour stages (and 24 giro stages) multiple gt wins and all five classics. You don’t win tt’s without a racing brain.
Merckx wouldn't have won those sprints if Cav had been in his era.
