Ambleside - Loughrigg Terrace - Grasmere - Dunmail Raise - Great Tongue - Dollywaggon Pike - Helvellyn - Lower Man - Glenridding - Hartsop - The Knott - High Street - Thornthwaite Beacon - Troutbeck - Skelghyll - Jenkin Crag - Ambleside. About 35 miles. I would only do it in summer - you'd need the light...

most of it, but my bike broke part way up from Hartsop (the others claim I undid the bolt myself). It's very hard but glorious views and riding. I've ridden all the parts of it.

PS after clareymorris's post the other night, you might consider doing Froswick/Ill Bell/Yoke/Garburn, though that misses the insane downhill on The Rake...

When were you thinking of Ton?
There's plenty to go at, but depends on conditions/hours/miles.

Keswick, Watendlath, Rosthwaite, Greenup, Far Easedale, Grasmere, Tongue Gill, Grizedale Tarn, Dollywaggon, Nethermost, Helvellyn, White Side, Raise, all the Dodds, Calfhow Pike, Clough Head, Fisher's Wife's Rake (if you can find it) Wanthwaite, Threlkeld, Skiddaw House, Lonscale Fell and finish with the Latrigg descent.

You did say tough. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

In Jan/Feb, unless it's frozen and sunny (like now), I'd stay off the tops (Helvellyn etc). I recall you've met High St when wet!?
There's a good figure of 8 round Skiddaw and Blencathra - and you could add the Borrowdale Bash if you weren't tired.
In the south you could go from Grizedale, up over to the end of Coniston Water, through by Woodland to Broughton Moor, round the River Lickle/Stephenson Ground singletrack to the Duddon Valley, then back over Walna Scar and up over Lawson Park.

If you want details of these or other ideas I could mail you (addy?) when I've more time (may come out to play - kids permitting).

ST Issue 44 route guide, The Three Passes.
Start at Staveley, go over Garburn (heading E) then over to Sadgill, up Gatescarth, down to Haweswater. From there it's straight up Nan Bield and down to Kentmere. One last pull over the fells back to Staveley. VERY hard and at this time of year you will need to start by 9 or you will run out of light.

I have sworn never to go this way with a bike again ๐Ÿ™ Evil.Ghastly. Go over Harter Fell instead.
