anyone can ride with the seat not lowered it is just less fun and harder.
NO one doing a downhill race would have the seat in the same place as someone doing a XC race for fairly obvious reasons

yeh xc racers have far more skill than jimjam wearing fat boys ๐
Still find it stupid though to wear 2 shorts at the same time.
Then again I don't like these sewn-in diaper-patches anyway.
Who needs additional bulk in that area?
You could just wear baggies without lycra/padding/undershorts and sit down less. I do and I'm awesome...
The anti dropper post sentiment might make sense if it was coming from those that ride everything with their saddle dropped (low and fast downhill and stand up for the climbs) arguing that dropper posts are for those that are too weak to pedal standing up. But on the whole it's quite the opposite.
Droppers are great for people into different types of riding. Some XC weenies like lycra and lots of post, DH hooligans don't even really need seatposts. The rest of us are somewhere in between.
Given the occasional bail, I'm glad I wear baggies over the lycra. I also feel more comfortable with my tackle concealed. I hate stopping at lights/walking without the bike or anything else that isn't pedalling when in roadie mode.
Dedicated mincers need not have the extra weight, full time huckers don't need padding. Normal mountain bikers probably need a bit of both ๐
it seems the people who could easily be described as the very best in the world use dropper seatposts
They're blatantly talent compensators then.
They're the EPO of the mountain biking world!
I see a pattern emerging there....it seems the people who could easily be described as the very best in the world use dropper seatposts, implying that they prefer to put their seats down for descents. Implying that anyone who attempts to argue otherwise is either a genuine riding god, or more likely a simpleton who's never ridden beyond a trail centre or bridleway and is so full of their pomp and bullsh*t they can't smell when they shovel a ton of it.
wow, you really did bite hard! ๐
all those pictures and not one proper sized wheel between them
it's clear that you are a dropper post user
it's clear that you are a dropper post user
I'm not actually.
all those pictures and not one proper sized wheel between them
I love the way people on stw jump to deride everything that might give an advantage on a bike and people who might use them are labled as inept technology dependent mbuk reading idiots....except 29ers who's advocates insist they are better in everyway than 26" wheeled bikes.
I find a dropper post works really well on my road bike, also Lycra over baggies helps for comfort.
I have stopped putting my saddle down for descending, and now just raise it for climbing.
The Budgies!!! Won't somebody think of the Budgies!!! ๐ฏ oh' dear lord!....
It might be a camel toes face next time......
I love the way people on stw jump to deride everything that might give an advantage on a bike
some of us haven't fallen for the hype, you don't need all that kit to ride a bike and have fun you know. advantage? having to adjust a seatpost up and down for every descent and carry all the weight of the latest must have gadget about?, can't see the advantage in that unless you are desperate to have the latest look that the bike companies and mags tell you you need
except 29ers who's advocates insist they are better in everyway than 26" wheeled bikes.
better in everyway for me, i'm not tiny. any of those small wheeled bikes you posted pictures of would feel like a childs bike to me (i've done 20+ years trying to fit on 26" wheeled bikes before trying 29ers) i can't speak for any other "advocates"
i dont see why more people dont wear baggies over lycra.
Too hot. I prefer to just wear normal shorts.
I have stopped putting my saddle down for descending, and now just raise it for climbing.
Lol, maybe. A new concept, a riser post. ๐
So RD you personally prefer a 29 er but dont prefer a dropper post...you are right everyone else's personal choice for them is wrong if they are not doing what you do
PS what other aspect of your lifestyle choices do I need to adopt now
jUnKyArD ๐
I prefer baggy Lycra, its a special look.
Lol, maybe. A new concept, a riser post.
POSTED 17 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST
No. A dropper post would be a new concept. All current models are riser posts.
I want a post that drops at the push of a button. That you pull back to climbing height.
It's the right way of doing things.
I should rewire a gravity dropper.
rOcKeTdOg(29ers)better in everyway for me
rOcKeTdOgsome of us haven't fallen for the hype....desperate to have the latest look that the bike companies and mags tell you you need
Please, stop. I am being crushed beneath a tidal wave of irony. Did you ever consider the possibility that you were just crap on a bike, hence your inability to ride one with 26" wheels? Maybe you needed a dropper post?
brant have you been drinking?
Either way I only wear lycra padded liners on long days out and then I wear baggys over the top because I prefer them. Call my uncomfortable with myself for being a bit podgy and not wanting to ear lycra then fine.
I have an old school dropper although I think they used to be called a quick release seat clamp?
Quite like the riser/dropper idea but can't be bothered with the expense for 90% of what I ride.
Lycra definitely not an alternative but it does feel good....
Ahh.. I've just had a brilliant idea!
Lycra over baggies for tomorrows ride.
No budgies, no snaggage and I'll be able to descend 32x faster. Sorted!
Lol @ Rocketdog's excellent windupmerchantage! Bravo that
man.

What a tragic bloody thread...
I'd like to think MTBers were generally a bit more accepting of difference within the sport in terms of atire and kit. But it seems there are still some miserable ****ers about....
Concerning the dropper/riser-posts on those pro bike pics above:
- do those pros actually use them during a DH race??
- if not (shouldn't have time and need) are these their training bikes?
- if not it might - just an idea - be part of their sponsoring deal?!
Apart from that I am not a hater: while I don't need the things for my own type/terrain of riding
I can totally see the appeal for those who have to winch themselves up steep gradients (or cycle cross-country to get there!) and then go down technical stuff etc.
P.S.:
The whole skill compensator discussion is ridiculous (as always) because it's all relative:
- not so skilled people might be better with a skill compensator
- skilled people might be even better with a skill compensator
- those who don't use them - skilled or not - feel better about themselves for not "needing" them
What's not to like? ๐
You could just wear baggies without lycra/padding/undershorts and sit down less. I do and I'm awesome...
Tell me about it! ๐ Though I do sit down a lot.
Briefs for the tackle, baggies for cover, un-padded lycra tights for when it's cold.
The latter sometimes under baggies, but only with disdain and despite the fact that it looks utterly daft.
I mean, come on! Shorts with black tights showing underneath...?!! ๐
Future fashion police will shake heads in disbelieve, future forum threads will share pictures of those days with the same mesmerised shiver, hidden awe and open ridicule that we indulge in when looking at early 90s pictures with multi-neon-colour tights and bib shorts over T-Shirts -> popular current 90s pic thread
I'm sure they will! And rightly so.
I really like how we are boiling quickness of a DH run to the type of seat post you have. Last time I checked, I drop my post(QR) so I have more clearance when leaning my bike in stupid angles and not bashing myslef against it. No matter how fast I am going.
I am a man of utility, and a cheap bastard, so I wear baggies all day, everyday.
**** me, the reason all those guys have lycra inside baggies and use dropper posts is because their bollocks are mahoosive, didn't you know that ?!
Funny thread this!
Surprised no one else has mentioned the occasional problem of cycle pads catching on the saddle when not changing the height. I have had that a few times which is disconcerting given the importance of moving back forward. Hence prefer tris shorts these days with less of a pad.
prefer tris shorts these days with less of a pad
๐ to find helpful information in this kind of thread! Bliss!
And apart from that proofs my point that entertaining nonsense attracts many readers and more readers increases chances of getting 1 or 2 reasonable posts. Forum fishing so to speak. Nonsense bait for the catch of the day.
Sorry, got distracted, will google "tri shorts" now... ๐
I am glad to help hock. Loads of places to get tri shorts in sales. I wear mine under a pairs of normal running tights at the moment. No need for buying special bike leggings and warm enough and comfy enough too. Tri shots are not great for a full day our though as you might want more of a pad.
Now if you can help me mend my front mechs!! Trapped in against cogs and can't seem to adjust correctly. Internet link on fixing would be great!
Is this one of any help: Front Mech Video Tutorial ?
Not sure if they deal with trapped mechs though... ๐
Not much of a bike mechanic myself. The front mech on my old bike was set-up 15 years ago, I never touched it and it stills work fine while my current main bike is singlespeed... but... if you could explain in a little more detail how/why they are trapped... I'm happy to give it some thought! ๐
