Looking to purchase a hardcore hardtail & im looking for a wee bit of advice whether a through axle makes much difference. Thanks in advance.

have you ever had a Qr axle break on you?
have you got through axle wheels you'd like to use?

I've never really noticed much difference from a qr if I'm honest.
Much prefer a through axle though just for simplicity and such.

Never had a qr axle break on me. I know I have a through one on my full sus & there is an option on some hardtails. I was just wondering if it made much of a difference?

Depends on your hubs - if it's an option I'd go for it. Ideally with some sort of hope hubs to enable future upgrades.

Cy from cotic thinks they are a heavy expensive waste of time...
And I'm sure he knows more than any of us.

However he caved and included them on his new frames due to demand.

Have to say I'd rather have an axel standard that matches my other bikes... so I'd vote through axle

Best argument in favour is cross-compatibility with your other bike.

Is that an issue for you?

Cross compatiblite isn't a real issue. Looking to build the hardtail from separate parts but it is a good point well made. You never know when you may need to swap a wheel over.

I turned my c456 into a 12mm through axle just to make it the same as my other two bikes

Hi. Personally I got both. My 456evo11 got a 9mm qr which I changed to a DT SWISS ratchet axle , which I really like. On my codiene 650b it's a 12mm maxle through axle.through axle easier to install ,never a problem with rubbing brake pads on instillation, unlike qr axles. I'd say if going for a qr get a DT SWISS ratchet system axle, you won't regret it.plus with 12mm through your gonna get at least 142mm hub, but with 9mm qr you get 135mm hubs.also it follows that if you've got a frame with 9mm qr with 135mm hubs your gonna have a 1? steerer.on one do a hardtail with 12mm through axle but it's only suitable for 1x drive.but that's another kettle of fish.

I'd say it's fairly noticeable on forks, but I can't say it feels any different on the frame.

Lots of frames with tapered/44 headtube and qr rear...

I agree with above - don't notice it on the rear. Having said that I probably don't ride hard/fast enough to make a difference!

There's no real stiffness or strength advantage of one versus the other, and depending on the system used it need not be heavier in any notable way (could even be lighter) or more expensive (discounting nasty cheap qrs for a second). So it really comes down to function. I prefer the function of a through axle, so all our frames use them, but we could have gone qr on the hardtails with no concerns.
