Wife maybe looking for new bike and it's amazing how few options there are, obviously more men's bikes are sold but it's embarrassing how few choices ladies have.
See the thread on guys buying ladies bikes. In most cases he difference are colour, saddle and (mibbe) bar width.

Not really, as a so-called men's bike may suit her better.
I have never owned a ladies mountain bike.
Mostly if you're under 5' 4" or so then mens bikes don't work. There are a few companies who make small bikes for men but not many.
BS.
My GF is 5Ft 2" and is in her second FS 29er (Canyon nerve before and now Spec Camber) both size small 'mens'. Both fit her really well and she's way faster on the Camber!
She's no exception 2 of her friends are the same height - both on 29er FS bikes size S 'mens'.
And if you still think thats odd - take a look at Katy Wintons bike of choice for the EWS and she's 5 ft 2 as well.

Of course if you're nearer 5 ft then it may be trickier.

Really ! MrsbeanZ is 5'2" she currently got a T130 , 456 and a salsa el mariachi . Past bikes include - trance , five ( non diva ) super light and a few more mens bikes .
How tall is the wife?
There are some options for smaller frames but there aren't any companies which make bikes specifically for men.
Giant have gone deep in range spec with their Liv bikes and Trek with theirs.. down to 14.5" Liv, 14" Trek. Specialized down to XS sizes too.
Not as many spec levels as mens certainly, but plenty of range to suita variety of budgets.
And it has vastly improved in the last few years. I am a 5'9" women, so I ride mens bikes. I know that shorter female friends get on with small/xs Canyons, Liv seem to do some decent stuff and obviously at the upper end, Juliana. But yes, choice is limited. If she is over 5'6", a mens frame, without too longer reach, might work. I've never actually ridden a womens bike - I guess in some respects the longer seat tube and shorter top tube would be good. Just haven't had to limit myself, as you say, to the limited range.
5 foot 2 inches on a good day, she might get away with some small men's frames but once you start trying to put a dropper on it starts getting tricky.
Trek got deals on ladies bikes, also I've seen a lot of ladies bikes on online stores going for good prices.just look online through the bigger online stores, bet your be surprised at the good prices you can find.
There are some good small bikes around 15.5" Specialized Epic & Scott Spark are suitable for the 5'4" range, even smaller then 14.5" Trek Fuel and Santa Cruz Superlight are tiny. I use a loop of brake cable held with an electrical screw block to restrict dropper rise.
My 5ft 2 misses has a lovely Specialized Rhyme, very nice bike indeed.
MsWife has an Xs Liv Lust, which is basically a Giant Anthem. It's far too small for me to really appreciate, but she seems to like it...
We fitted some 140mm cranks, cos her little legs don't like pedalling in massive circles.
Meta 5 carbon that I built up for the ex is a s/m and fitted her spot on at 5'4
Droppers no issue either - 100mm on the FS - 125mm on the HT.
Katy Winton is "a midget" in her words and rides a normal "mans" bike without issue. Woman's MTB bikes are generally not that much different to men's bikes, with some notable exceptions. I can see how it can make a difference on road bikes due to be more stretched out, women having typically shorter torso/longer leg ratios than men but for off road, it's generally just around contact points. It's really more around who makes small enough frames.
Yeah it's stand over height that seems to be the issue, bigger wheels and longer travel make it hard to make something that isn't a bit unwieldy if you need to stop mid trail. Giant do seem to have a few nice things out, cheers for the advice as it's hard to find many small bikes anywhere to try
My lovely rides a Trek Remedy, mens small. She loves it and assures me it is her favourite bike yet.
How tall is she mike, remedy's are quite nice although fuel probably more appropriate. Not many that she likes the colour of, not too feminine but not macho stealth black either.
She is 5'4" with a 28" inside leg. She could probably got a medium as the Remedy has quite a short reach, but she prefered the shorter wheel base.

except they don't.
