Morning all,
I replaced the headset on my old raleigh yesterday, but got stuck when I threaded on the locknut.
The new headset seems to have about half a cm less stack height than the old one, so the locknut stops on the top of the steerer, leaving half a cm of steerer below it, and the brake cable stop hanger rattling around in the breeze. And no front brake!
Have I bought the wrong headset? Do you need to make sure you get one with the right stack height to match your frame and fork? I just bought a Tange Levin CD based on price/quality/reviews, replacing the Tange whatever that was on there before.
Or are you supposed to cut your steerer to length? Or fit spacers?

you can fit spacers, or cut the steerer. threaded headsets do vary in stack height.
You can cut the steerer to suit as long as the thread will take the top race down low enough. But it sounds as though yours is OK
Cool, cheers chaps. there's plenty of thread to cut, but I think I'll fit spacers. I don't need the stem slammed, and the slot down the back of the steerer ends before the top, and it doesn't feel ideal to cut the steerer down so it's open to the top.
Dont cut the steerer. Not easy to de-burr the end after cutting, risking possible cross threading on re-assembly.
Either add spacers, or change the headset for one with the correct stack height.
Yeah you can just get one inch threadless spacers and slide them on between the two threaded locknuts.
Will the anti turn washer from the old headset fill the gap?
there wasn't one in there, probably part of the reason the headset was knackered!
