There was a thread on here a while back about some light road wheels built up cheaply. Can't seem to find it on the search. Any chance someone could locate it?
Is it this one?

No i'm afraid thats not the right one.
It was about a guy building up a set of road wheels that came in at not much over 1kg for a very low price.
Stans alphas, A2Z hubs, spokes of your choice. 1.3kg prob achievable for £300?

Lightweight deep section carbon bling, about 700 quid?
a2z are disc hubs. Would be worth a look if they had no disc fitting on the side. 2 year warranty as well :O/
Ah...ok...the non disc equivalent then.
Novetech on eBay are the way to go (eBay 'six pawl hubs'), Planet-X 20mm tub rims and Revs. Shouldn't be much over 1kg
As njee20, that's the cheap route to mega light wheels. No tubes alpha rims if you want clincher.
I used American classics, Alpha rims & revolution spokes (28h for stiffer build) & got them to 1270 genuine weight without skewers. If you built 20 fr & 24 rr you could go lighter still without any problems, novatech hubs to save a bit more cash.
Presumably that was with alu nips?
Yep, alloy nipples, built by me & weighed by me on digital scales, no point in using brass nipples with a wheelset like that, built them as my 'best wheels' for summer use & climbing days.
Sorry, double checked the weight & they're 1274g, excluding skewers
Still slow up hills though 😉
These Superstar wheels looks good if don't want the faf: http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=77&products_id=520
You'll be as slow me me one day!
Try being about 2' shorter 😛
excuses excuses etc etc...
superstar hubs on stans alhpa sims about 1350g 251 delivered pleased with mine
Shorter means less weight 😉
Those Superstar ones are good value!
Shorter means less weight
And better looking bikes, instead of having to ride a gate 😉
SS hubs do seem very good value, although given the choice I think I'd go novatech-a friend of mine has ridden 3 full seasons of 'cross on a pair without so much as a service & still going strong.
Yep if I change my PowerTap I'm tempted to build 3 sets - Open Pros for the commuter, Alphas for 'every day' and some 50mm carbon tubs for riding around town looking cool.
I think looking at the price of those novotec hubs I think I'm going to have to learn how to build wheels!
I'm running those Novatech hubs on my 50mm carbons from Ebay. Had them about a year and a half and they are still running well. Although the freehub body does get chewed up a little.
I think looking at the price of those novotec hubs I think I'm going to have to learn how to build wheels!
If you're East Midland direction Tom, give me a shout.
Goldenwonder I live in Leeds and Leicester (week in Leicester, weekend in Leeds).
ignore me! found them
I looked at those superstar wheels, but read reviews that alphas can be a bit flexy and my experience of superstars build for my crest wheelset was not good so didn't want to risk it.
As these were to be my winter wheels I didn't want to go super light so I went for a set of braccianos - yes weigh a bit but very respectable at 1400g - on offer at CRC at the moment for £230 less another 10%.
I'm near Mansfield, happy to build a set if you get the bits in & can drop them off. I'm not a fan of posting wheels unless I really have to.
Let me know if you want to have a chat about them, email's in my profile & a few people on here will (hopefully) vouch for my building!
