Never had an on one but tempted by the new c456. Any thoughts that could help with my decision to go for one. What are the old ones like? Good, bad indifferent?

I don't think they look as good as the steel ones. No idea how they ride etc etc.

I needed a bike for commuting and also for weekend rides at trail centres and xc riding. My old fs bike was just too heavy to commute on despite being a decent spec so I went for a c456 and I couldn't be happier. Rides brilliantly on the trails and the slack head angle gives you loads of confidence going downhill. My LBS bloke has a few bikes but seems to ride his c456 more than his other bikes.

Wheels too small for a new bike?

They ride nicely but lack proper finishing. Unless you get one of the newest ones you can't get the headset out without destroying it, the head tube is too short for some RS tapered forks and there's random cable guides everywhere, that don't take full length outers. A bike that could have been great but was spoiled by lack of testing and attention to detail.

Oh, and they do this to On One set posts as well, and On One don't answer emails about it, or when you ask what size the headset lower bearing is.

I'm sure there was reference to this problem on the launch of the updated version.....

Flipping loving mine.

Great pointing downwards and so light for a capable bike that climbing is also great.

I rode the peaks yesterday and the rocky descents were no issue at all, ultra stable and nowhere near as harsh as my old ally frame.

Mine is raw carbon and I love the stealthy looks.

Oh and the down tubes fatness is great at minimising mud flicking up 😀

I have banged on about it too much... I quite liked mine, it rode decently, but the finish was dismal and they ratted out of the warranty on it. All in all the bike was decent enough but the overall experience was pretty terrible.

There's a newer version on its way which should be worth a long look, there were some outright bad design elements in the last one like the head tube issue and the poor cable guide... But also the revised geometry might liven it up a bit and bring it more up to date.

Struggled with mine to begin with. Thought it was quite boring, if I am honest. Don't get a smoothie headset. They are dire as PP points out. Changed the tyres for lighter ones and transformed the bike. Its going to Spain in May, so lets hope I don't get killed by lack of rear boingyness. Running 140mm up front.

That's great. We've taken a lot of time working on the issues that some riders had with the previous version in this new model.

These include:-

Improved standover height with dropped top tube.
Dropper cable guides.
Glass fibre sleeved seat-tube upper to guard against galvanic corrosion (as shown by the scabby seatpost below, something I've only seen once, but we did anyhow).
Improved cable guides.
Improved ride response.
New Evo geometry - lower BB, steeper seat angle, slacker head angle.
ISCG05 mounts, recessed 2.5mm from the 73mm BB face.
Revised headtube inserts for easy headset removal.

Anyone know the weight of the new carbon evo, how does evo geometry ride with a 120mm fork?

I quite liked my one, sold it on to a mate who is still riding and live it.

Feels very nice and stable on the downs and very light frame weight helps on the climbs. But that same stability makes it feel a bit boring unless you are hooning it about on technical terrain. For XC riding I preferred it with 120mm fork which steepened the head angle a little bit for more lively handling. For DH wound out my u-turn fork to 150mm and had great fun.

As said the finishing and build quality are adequate at best but the frame rides well.

PS. i built up my c456 as a cheap winter hack and find myself riding it quite a lot. The revisions for the Evo version pretty much answer any complaints i might have with it tbh 😉

Going for one of these over a 45650B later in the year. Just need to scrape the cash together. I too will running @ 120mm for starters.

They don't look as nice as either the old one or the steel one, but who cares, that kink is there for a reason.

Unless a steel 26" 456 with a 44mm HT comes out before I've got the money together this will be my next bike.

I'm happy with mine - and its lasted 18 months, which is nearly a record for me - not bad for a new £250 frame

In fact, its incredible that i have not broken it

Therefore top marks!

Great thrash around bike - short stem, 140mm forks and a dropper - plenty stiff enough to climb well and great fun on the downs

£250 - bargain of the year 🙂

I bought one of the first of the original 456Cs off the boat, it was a superb frame. I'm a chap that's been through quite a few frames and it's the only one I regret getting rid of because I've not ended up with anything better. I sold the frame and parts so I could fund a new FS bike, but was left with a gaping hole in my collection that I should really have filled before now.

It's finest hour was when I realised I couldn't remove the headset to fit it to the FS bike, so I had to take it to the Lakes the following day. We rode off the top of Old Man of Coniston and it didn't bat an eye lid and was happy keeping up with 6 inch bouncy bikes all the way down.

As above, the headset issue was annoying, but it's not something you really look to change very often and I had no problems with the bearings. I used a carbon seat post, so no issues with corrosion. I ran Lyriks, which suited the bike perfectly, smash down and then wind down for the climbs. Strong but not too heavy.

Really looking forward to the new one, I'll be stripping my Transition TransAM down for parts and moving that on I suspect.

Awesome!
