Is the point to save weight or run lower pressures?'Cause if it's to save weight how can it be any different than running ordinary tubes with Slime in em? Had the idea put to me yesterday.Apart from the fact i don't have a compressor it seems a lot of faff to me.So enlighten me.
less punctures?
no pinch punctures.
Lower pressures are just a perk.
Sharki the only time Slime has seemed to let me down lately was when you hexed the Qs for me !!!!!!!!!!!!!
As there is only a "half tube", there is some small weight loss. This possibly is negated by running sealant in them. The main issue with slime tubes is their wieght, and the fact you can pinch them. No pinching with ghetto. With tubeless tyres (ust) people still run sealant and the ust specific tyres seem to be heavier.I run mine because I hate puntctures. I always carry a speare tube though.
hex is lifted as of 5am tomorrow
You don't need a compressor, a track pump does just as well. The trick is to clean the bead on the rim.
Lower pressures, no pinch flats, no punctures - have run ghetto for 9 months with no problems. Cheap - inner tube £3, DT Swiss kit £30 ish.
I've managed to inflate ghetto with track pump first time. Soapy water on the rim/bead. On DT Swiss kit and Stans rims I have to use a CO2 canister to seat it originally and then use a track pump. Go for Schwalbe tubes and you can remove the valve core which makes adding sealant easier than removing 6 inches of the tyre.
no punctures
Higher pressures with similiar levels of grip to that of lower pressures - if you know what I mean (only one rubber wall to deflect rather than tyre AND tube)
no punctures
+1
Have ghetto on my h/t,& I reckon its saved me having lots of pinch flats over the last few months if the number of dings in my rear rim are owt to go by...
I've never yet seen or had a tubless wheel that hasn't punctured. It's less likely to puncture, but eventually it will. Seen pinch flats with tubless too. Lower pressure, it's nice, but it's not the be all and end all. weight, maybe a little less, maybe not.
It is however a faff to set up. Messy, trailside when you do have to stick a tube in, you still have to carry inners, a pump and a repair kit all JIC, trying to get some tyres up is an exercise in futility, and effing about with compressors for a bicycle is an admission of it's inherent crappiness.
Some sort of tubless system is probably the future, but rim strips, ghetto and latex ain't it, sorry.
Don't be sorry nick. It's not for you but works for thousands of others. 5 minutes faff whenever you change tyres is infinitely more preferable to 3-4 punctures a week for me. You get used to it and good at it too. I've watched muppets with tyre levers trying to get their tyres off when i could have done the whole ghetto system with a CO2 cartridge by the time they have.
