[#11465748]

Some of you might remember that I had a big heart attack back in October 2019 &then a second smaller one in March. After both I tried to get back to cycling (slowly).

Well I'm currently led in hospital following a third heart attack (the third in 13 months) which I had a few days ago (ambulance called by work colleagues).

I've been told that I should be able to cycle again in time, so wish me luck for my third attempt. I suspect that I'll be nervous about a fourth but the doctors are hopeful that I should be free of further attacks for a few years yet 🤞

Blimey. Good luck and best wishes for your recovery.

Due to heart issues I've been on an ebike for a few years now. Perhaps time to think seriously about getting one?

Heal well PJay! Any idea what is causing them?

I agree with the above, an Ebike may be of benefit to keep you cycling and not cause too much strain.

Thanks for the kind wishes. I'm home now but still feeling a bit groggy (I had a third angioplasty & 2 more stents).

I've no idea what's causing them. Prior to the really big attack back in October 2019 I was given a lifestyle risk of less than 5% but my family history of heart disease isn't great (on either side).

My first attack was a complete blockage of the LAD which killed off a chunk of heart muscle but I was told that my remaining cardiac arteries were only mildly affected and would be managed by medication. When I was admitted to a second hospital (I've been in a different hospital following each attack) it was suggested that the first hospital had misread the state of my other arteries, which were in fact severely ischaemic; this appears to have led to the second attack. The third is a bit of a mystery (after 2 angioplasties I'd assume that everything would be flowing well) but I was told that I during a particular procedure they'd only stent the worst areas and that I must have a very aggressive heart disease (not encouraging for the long term).

As each attack further damages the heart I'm not keen to have any more but they seem hopeful that I should be able to avoid further ones for some years (although I may well have more in later years & a bypass operation may be needed at that point).

I really want to get back on the bike in time but I think I'm going to be extremely nervous in case something else happens, but we'll see. All the input I've had pushes for regular exercise to improve hearth health, but each time I try I seem to end up with more problems.

Anyway, thanks again for the kind thoughts. Hopefully soon I can stop posting about hearts and ask my usual daft questions about bikes.

Don't rush things and keep the focus on riding again!

Heart attacks* are my biggest fear as they just happen with nothing you can do about it at the time. It's one of the drivers behind me getting bike fit actually, both parents are overweight and have a history of heart trouble on both sides of each of their family!

* it was choking but I've blacked out from that twice now and it wasn't that bad, no pain as it goes all dark.

OP, will they not offer a by pass operation now? Makes sense to do it whilst strong? Or is the risk heightened during such a procedure? GWS anyway

No, they've only mentioned it as a possible future intervention although I do wonder whether, if during the first procedure, they'd correctly assessed that my entire cardiac pipework was shot (rather that stating that it was single vessel disease) they'd have done a bypass and saved me 2 further heart attacks.

The surgeon's letter mentioned that fact that I've had had 3 attacks in a very short time whilst under optimal medication but goes on "Now we have revascularised all vessels well. I hope he does well without further MIs or need for further revascularisation for a long time". I've rather taken to mean that further attacks further at a later might be an issue and that a bypass might be considered then ('a long time' is a bit vague and 'hope' not quite as certain as I'd like).

Over the last few months I've posted on here about getting another bike and e-bikes keep getting suggested. At present I've got a bit of a block, wanting to still be able to do things under my own steam. I have a Swift, which I ride as a gravel bike, it's great but a tad heavy and I have been considering a lighter 'proper' gravel bike but this latest attack seems to have hit me a bit harder than the previous 2 (I've been feeling low and a bit 'under the weather') and I might have to reassess what I want/need/can afford etc. In any event the market's not conducive to buying at the moment, so we'll wait and see.

I've even wondered about buying a budget smart trainer instead of a another bike. I'm going to be worried about further events and if something does go wrong at least I'd be safe[r] at home rather than stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

Anyway, it's a bit early to be making too many decisions, but there are options.

Oof, sorry to read all of that Pjay. Good that you have a fairly positive attitude: I think I would be a quivering wreck hiding behind the sofa! Having a goal of riding again, in whatever form, has to be good. Healing vibes man.

Hoping things settle for you. As you know I have heart disease, but with less impact than you so far, and have recently gone e for both MTB and road, whilst keeping some regular bikes. I had a lovely 25 mile hilly gravel ride yesterday on my human powered Fugio. In my opinion ebikes make you stronger, not the reverse.

For me, a blend of e and non e is my current future.
