[Closed] thinking of having a bike cull . Anyone else done it or am i mad

I reduced down to a road bike and a mtb about four years ago. I now have five again (full suss, SS, commuter, road, CX) 🙂

lol thats what i was kinda worried about clubber i almost sold the turner the other day two fellas offered money out of the blue when i mentioned i didnt ride it any more. But it really got me thinking

I tried to do that but still ended up with 4, just that 2 of them were different!

3 years ago I cut down from 6 bikes to 3 , the road bike never got used , the tourer got used once or twice a year and I only need one hardtail.

That left me with an XC bike that will double as a tourer with different tyres , an AM/DH bike cos I luv the gravity stuff and a bmx for embarassing myself in front of the cool kids!

I don't miss the bikes I sold.

i thought it might be mad i know i could sell pretty easy but it would be expensive to get them back if i changed my mind. Ive recently only been riding the pig but in my mind i know the choice is there already should i fancy something different. Yeah prob mad . Esp as its took years to get to where i am now

Doing the same thing here as I'm shot for space.

I'll be selling my roadbikes and mtb to leave me one roadbike and one mtb and one commuter.

Saves maintenance time too.

Saves tripping over wheels too.

tho a little voice keeps saying one mtb and possibly a road bike is all you need . Bugger that little voice is isnt it lol

I tried and failed, but it dfepend where you live, in the lakes or peaks you could probably get away with 1 XC/Trail bike and a roadie.

Down south the trail bike is just a dog, there just aren't the trails to realy let it loose on, so I'm planing on droping that in favour of something lighter. And then getting a '06 spesh enduro or mmmbop for the weekends away.

sunny leeds lol i think the problem in my head is it would have to be an all or nothing thing too id have to sell two and be stuck then but obviously that would be a bugger to sort out too. Will have to give it some deep thought.

You've got more than i would ever justify but I [i]can[/i] justify 4.

I've been thinking similar things, but my collection includes some pretty rare bikes, so I keep putting it off.

I have:
1 x Yeti 4x Special Projects for downhill and dirt jump fun
1 x Keewee 24" hardtail for dirt jump fun, doesn't get used, but is 1 of 11 so hard to part with.
A road bike, doesn't get used but should
2 x BMX, these are raced so won't be used, really the Keewee and road bike should go and be replaced with an xc hardtail, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

I have managed to get down from 5 to three, now just a commuter / rigid mtb, a hardtail mtb and a do-it all full sus. Just about holding it all together but if I had more money / space I'd be back to 5 like a shot...

I went from XTC carbon, S-Works Enduro and 456 - to a 456, but kept most of the bits off the other two. Only regret was selling the forks from the XTC as I needed another pair for when one of my sons trashed theirs...

Sell frames, keep everything else.

maybe i should keep hold i guess im not short of storage space its just lack of use really i think thats making me think. Interesting that some who have had a cut down have built the collection back up

Mick, while you have cash to blash on bikes you will always have too many?? bikes.
I did have once & found that because I was buying used frames I could sell them for what I paid for them.
Last year I had a new Heckler, a Ventana El Ciclon, & an Anthem Advanced. The Heckler I bought new so that stay's, the Ciclon is too close in travel to the Heckler so that got split, & the Anthem a bit small - so sold the stuff I didn't want & bought a new Turner DW Flux.
Now I'd loose too much money if I sold the Heckler & Flux so have to keep them, & I've no spare money for bikes, so I'm cured. Or is that sad & broke?
If you can afford it why stop? But if you have bikes that are similar try to keep to extreme's.

unless you desperately need the space or the money then keep them.

3 for me:

Yeti 575 - Set up light for long rides / 2nd bike at enduros etc

Commencal 666 - Set up heavy for uplift days / bike park at Glentress etc

On One Scandal 29er - Alfine Hub - built for solos later this year - I pick it up Friday ready for Hit The North on Saturday

I wouldn't want to cut it down really and I don't even have a road bike / commuter!!!

Of these, I don't really need the fixed road or one of the MTBs, but they're all paid for and I have the space. Only the MTBs don't get much usage, all the others are used.

I've a job interview tomorrow, where the ideal commuting route would be at least partly off road, which got me to thinking a cross bike might be in order if I get the job.... 🙄

Pick your best frame. Build it with the best bits you've got. Sell the rest of the bits. Build a new fleet. Job done.

I am planning a cull too. Got way too many bikes, and loads of weird stuff (which I'll keep).

Who in their right mind has a 16 speed [u]front[/u] chainset?

Should I pair it up with my Rohloff hub and have the first 224 speed bike?

1 ht mtb with swop out rear if i fancy single speed etc
Then 1x fs frame and fork hidden away
another steel ht frame hidden away
might get a all out xc race frame again to hide 🙂

The last two could become one and I could just ride singlespeed on the road in winter.

Look at how much you ride each bike? Are they costing you money or creating a problem just to keep. If not then keep them. You'll probably end up with that many again in the future at some point.

I did the same thing. my collection was a Hummer (old Scandvik one) a Nicolai Helius FR, a custom on one Inbred, and a Peugeot early 90's cross/winter roadie/commuter thing. All really, really nice bikes (mostly, apart from the crosser), but the Hummer was really only 100mm compatible, and the chain suck was getting out of hand, the Helius only got used every 5-6 months or so, I really wanted a proper road bike designed in this century, as riding the old Pug was a chore rather than a pleasure and the Inbred only got used October to March (or so), and every weekend was beginning to be taken up with just keeping up with all the jobs that needed doing on them. (not really but sometimes it felt like it)

So, sold the lot and bought a Chameleon, and a 2nd hand Principia. Very happy TBH, the Chameleon is such a versatile frame, and the nice roadie encourages me to use it rather than just endure it, plus costs of maintaining fleet has gone right down as has time spent on it.

It's almost Zen like, one for off road, one for on road...

Did this a couple of years ago- sold everything and bought a Ti456 and a Trek cross bike. One set of wheels for cross, one for the road and a rear with a turbo tire. The bike looks a bit shabby on the road, but does the job.
Ti456 does just about everything well.
I still keep buying the odd full susser, but a few rides, and its normally back to the 456. At the moment there's a motolite frame in the shed I've had for 3 months, and can't really be bothered building it up because I know I don't need it.

i tried to get down to 1 bike............it lasted 6 days... 😉
bought 4 since than, and sold 3 more.

Me too Ton - quite happy to get down to one bike . . . only problem was it was a different one every month 😉 . I've given up now - there's plenty of room in my kitchen for more . . . got a lovely budget d/h build on the go at the mo' 😛

Maintenence is a pain with a big fleet.

i went through a few bikes over the last 3 or 4 years - when cash was more plentiful and parts were cheap. i ended up with an intense 5.5, yeti arc, spesh s works tricross, scott cr1 sl and a yeti dj(the latter being the one overkill bike and if i had to the easiest to do without). for me its a nigh on ideal quiver, yes there are some bikes i'd like to try, a yeti arc-x for sure, maybe the scott for an s works tarmac/roubaix, and i'd poss consider swapping the arc frame for an asr if i saw a used one for a decent price, but i'm not fussed and i would worry that i'd be chainging something i like for something i may not.

so i'd say if your happy stick with em, if not move em on.

I don't think I can do it as I just looked at a few nice trail bikes, I think like almost everyone on here I have a bike problem, lol.

If you can afford them and have the storage space I'd say keep 'em. I've nearly sold a couple of my bikes over the years when I havn't been using them but always ended up glad I didn't. I'm now up to 9 bikes (albeit two aren't built up) but what the hell, I have a deep deep fear of lying on my death bed and thinking "I never had enough toys"....

I went down to my road bike and a patriot which could fulfill a few roles.

But I then decided to get a commuter to get some miles in now I've got a baby (ss road bike), and a friend sold me a trance which is better for local riding than the patriot. So now back up to four. Really would like a winter raod bike/audax bike/light tourer type thing that could handle my tow path commute and winter riding without having to ride my nice roadie through the winter crap; the ss is great but not quite versatile enough.

Storage space is my problem, otherwise I'd have hundreds of the things!

Who else has read what other people have got and thought I could do with one of those and gone straight to the classified section?

I sold my Turner 5 spot and 853 SS Inbred last year as I'm hardly riding at all now. Kept my Soda, Roubaix and old Pine Mountain. Guess what I seem to have spent most of this week doing...? Yep, I now NEED a FS again and can't stop surfing the internet!

Of course, if you are thinking of offloading the Turner, I could be persuaded to tell you that downsizing is the answer!

It is so hard i am at 5 useable bikes from a Five down to a single speed and a road bike but i also have my old Grifter i got from santa in 1981 oh i spent last summer putting it back to its former glory.I also did up a Shopper complete with shopping bag on the back.I am now using this to nip round for the papers.
i am now thinking about a Blue pig or an Evil hard tail

you lot make me feel better about having 3 lol! my 5 and sovereign are lovely and my commuter is a £300 decathlon bike. my problem is i never do a 'range' of mtb's; i just know i like em burly so always build them that way or id just end up changing stuff as i broke it. after riding my sovereign at the weekend i was weighing up selling the 5 but you have changed my mind, cheers!
