[#2985710]

Off on honeymoon to the Dolomites 03rd September. We’re driving through South West Germany and West Austria to get there. Any suggestion of stuff to see on the way?

Cheese and meat are a given, and lashings of beer, mmmmm.

I was in Sölden in May. Most of the hotels and bars etc., were already closed following the end of the Ski season, so it would be worth checking your route.

Not even crossed my mind geoffj, good point. Had a similar problem in Chamonix when we rocked up before all the lifts had opened. Thanks

If you've got a morning to spare, then i would highly recommend stopping at Garmisch Partenkirchen and taking a trip up to the top of the Zugspitze on the cable car. Fantastic views and sledging on big inner tubes available at the top, even at the height of summer, for the adventurous. A really nice part of the world.

Its more Central Austria but Halstatt is an amazing 'chocolate box' village, go later when the coaches have left. There are some amazing ice caves in the mountains above aswell. Salzburg is a good city visit. I like Austria, lots to see.

Black Forest in Germany is big but lacking in Gateau's.

Lindau is nice, Salzburg is nice.. GP isn't much but didn't try the Zugspitze although I wanted to. Berchtesgaten is the nicest part of the German Alps that I found, but you'll see more Alpine scenery that you can shake a stick at on your whole trip anyway so I'm not sure it's worth a detour.

For something non-Alpine try Nurmeburg for an old town and a cool castle that isn't all ruined like most of ours are (many of the castle buildings are now used as a youth hostel apparently) and also Burghausen, I quite liked the castle here although it won't take long to see it all.

Black Forest in Germany is big but lacking in Gateau's.

Gateaux.

The area around the Millstadter See is nice. Döbriach and Radentein picturesque and a bit further South Klagenfurt. As above beware the closures before the ski season re-starts, getting to an alpenhütte and finding it shut is a major downer.

Thanks guys. Love the sound of sledging, did something similar in Val Thorens and can safely say I almost bricked myself.
