Lovingly crafted rubber knobs, each one exquisitely pierced with a carbide stud...these aren't just tyres these are S&M tyres.

And remember they need running in on tarmac boys and girls - and it's blinking hard work on those draggy things.

Do I know something you don't? New ice age? Actually I suspect I may just have guaranteed a mild winter - particularly as the LBS owner has got himself a set having seen mine.

Bought them unused second-hand in the summer. They'd have been great for night riding last winter, which got sketchy from time to time if you recall.

If they don't get used this year, I'll use them next year. Or the year after. Or after that.

If you're not feeling it may I redirect you here.

And it's not a patio, it's a driveway - which I agree hasn't seen much love.

Why do they need running in on the road?

they look like Schwalbe Ice Spikers.

I put a set on last year, they leave great wolverine-like skid marks on large sheets of ice 🙂

Why do they need running in on the road?

to bed the spikes in

From: http://www.schwalbe.co.uk/spikes/

In order to ensure that spikes are permanently fixed, tyres should be run in for about 40km on asphalt, while avoiding any fast acceleration or heavy braking.

I have some Ice Spikers waiting for the snow if it comes.
Just reading about bedding them in on asphalt... Does it mean in snowy conditions or dry normal conditions?

Also, what kind of PSI do people run them at?

The bedding in thing is more an issue on poorer quality spike tyres from what some websites say.

Also don't ride um hard on clear roads/trails as you'll lose spikes.
Useful winter tyre info site

I've bought one from Clas Ohlson. It was just shy of 30 notes.
Pretty cheap cheerful tyre, but, it was worth a shot.
I'm gonna make a one to match out of a tioga dh for the other end of the bike.

Here is a UK site that sells Ice studs;

http://www.supatracks.com/best-grip-boot-studs-buy-online-uk.html

The 11OO type for shoes will do bike tyres, i bought 20 x 1100 type with installer for £21 inc P&P which will go in an old pair of walking boots, no point having ice tyres if you fall on yer ass when you get off the bike

More you buy, cheaper they are 🙂

HansRey - they're Ice Spiker Pro 2.35s. 361 spikes and tubeless ready.

Coastkid - is that the 2.1? The tread pattern looks slightly different and I can't see spikes on the edge knobs.

Yes, £80 the pair from CRC (£90 - £10 voucher) not cheap but half the price of a pair of Pugsley tyres!,
i have got all riding conditions covered now! 🙂

C.carbon - barn conversion of a structure that's at least 130 years old. Each individual brick is a slightly different size and shape (none of them are square edged), plus there's a sprinkling of old bricked up windows and doors, so I'm not going to worry about the pointing - so long as it's still there.
I like it, but it is for sale if anyone wants it, as elder son going to school is leading to a desire to move back towards the city - well the suburbs at least.
