Absolutely jonv, it's a mystery at times.

Surely if you don't help WvA then your best chance is 4th. If you do help and close it, you could get 2nd. All of this assumes WvA wins the sprint, but why wouldn't you close it?

The last 3 weeks were all bluff! He let Pogacar have the TdF knowing the ultimate prize would be his 😉

[how big a prize is Olympic gold in cycling compared to the classics or grand tours? I know for example the Tennisers don't really rate it as much as a Grand Slam even though the GS come every year]

I'm wondering how much team loyalties come into it as well. In theory they're racing for their country but there's always something in the background to say that you don't chase a teammate.

WvA is looking wrecked now.

Nice work by carapaz

You know what, after the working over that he got every time he tried anything at the Tour, I'm so happy for him. Played a tactical blinder.

Well, that was a satisfying winner.

So pleased it wasn't either WvA or Pogacar.

That is how carapaz should have played the tour

Equador team kit is the most stylish

Road races should never ever ever end on a motor circuit, it makes them look too slow

how big a prize is Olympic gold in cycling compared to the classics or grand tours?

Historically, teeny weeny, but its a higher profile nowadays

^^ Yeah, GvA made the most of his Olympic win. Gold bike, golden touches on his helmet and shoes, plus you get that for 4 years, not just one like a World Championships!

I think it'll be a huge deal for Ecuador, that's only the second gold medal they've ever won at an Olympics. Kind of like when Chris Boardman won Gold at Barcelona, it was a massive thing for GB and the start of a track cycling revolution.

I doubt it would work in the tour. No radios, national teams not as organised as commercial teams at the Olympics and the result is the best bike racer on the day wins.

I'd quite like to see at least one of the grand tours go back to no radios just to make things a bit different.

Agree, it would have got him a stage win, but wouldn't have got him the Tour.

Not sure which race you watched but the one I saw had Carapaz attack at every opportunity.

Fantastic race. The only disappointment for me is that for some reason Ecuador didn't use this kit:

G and Tao crashed

Can someone please give Thomas some stabilisers? He'd be an awesome rider if he could stay upright!!

Apparently this time Tao went down first. I reckon those Pinarellos are dodgy.

I watched it but was puzzled why I didn't get to sponsor a donkey, buy some incontinence pants or get a credit card with 45% interest.

Ha ha! I had to choose my own times to make a cuppa or go for a wee. Very strange.

Women's race same time tomorrow morning. Disappointed that it's such a short course compared to the Men's race though.

Anyone watching the woman’s race, willing these 3 to keep clear. Peloton don’t look organised.

She has been remarkable. Its so interesting how when the radios and team tactics are taken away, the status quo of who's in form and who usually wins gets completely blown outm I really like it!

Just needs to hang on a few minutes! She still looks good though...

Shame the other 2 have been caught. But this last 3 km could be interesting as a result.

Fully agree

Wow! What an amazing performance from the Austrian who hasn't even got a contract with a professional team. I think her life is about to change big time. It's really cheered my morning up.

Is it me, but there seemed to be a lack of congratulations to the winner after the finish. Did van Vleuten think she’d won it? She certainly seemed very happy with Silver when she crossed the line.

Yes, I thought that. I don't think the peloton knew there was somebody up the road.

In Lizzie’s interview on the BBC, she certainly thought van Vleuten had won!
