So apart from the dropout sticking out the box, at the other end the bottom of the head tube is dented, not sure if from transit or before. The lower race doesn't quite sit in the head tube because of the dent.

Is there any reason I shouldn't just hit it with a hammer to straighten it back out? Or do you think if I press in the lower race regardless it will straighten the head tube too?

Because it's under warranty and they'll take it back if you ask?

I know it's extra faff, but i'd be wanting a fresh frame, no messing about with dents on a new frame...

Meanwhile, i'm doing the slowest build ever due to lack of time (gonna blame it on a sick toddler). I've blacked out all the stickers and everything is pretty much ready to swap over.

@bigjim send it back and get a new one.

My xl bike also came in a box with the head tube out

So did mine, spoke to them on chat and it was replaced (well after I was given a refund and asked for it to be replaced). In the end good service.

Good service? More than one XL frame sent out in a box that's too small and damaged as a result doesn't sound like good service.

Bought mine as winter hack to save trashing the full susser (Ripmo)....

Now to be also used for the commute after the road bike went under a bus!

yeah but I'm overseas and the time/expense to find a box for it and post it back to UK hardly seems worth it for such a cheap frame if I can just smack it straight again or if a headset press will make it round again. I would like a new mech hanger though so I'll drop them an email, just haven't had time to think about it yet, think it'll be a xmas hols project.

My parkwood frame came the same way years ago so they must get a whole lot of returned frames/bent hangers from lazy packaging. says the guy too lazy to post it back ha

I notice there are a couple of scandals in the classifieds (already!) @Lovewookie - be interested to know why it didn't suit you?

Honestly, I think I'm just weird, or set in my ways..one of the two, or perhaps both..

It's a lovely bike, I think for those that have tried the LLS trend and get on with it.

I can see how it may work for me on paper, I've always preferred long bikes, but the geometry is very different to what I'm used to. However, I figured that the extra reach may work out any misgivings I've previoulsy had about slack bikes (my NS was an example of a bike that just felt slow, thought it was the steel frame, and the slack front and the relatively normal sized reach)

Back when the Inbreds were about (the bikes.) I found those a bit odd feeling. Should be long enough, but the slack-for-the-time head angle did something odd to how the bike felt on the trails I like to ride. Something not really reported, as most folk got it. I did have one set up with rigid forks, which worked nicely, but the forks were probably a bit short for the frame, but just right for me.

Anyway, back to the scandal.

to get comfy on it, I needed to stick the saddle all the way back. I guess steep seatubes don't really work for me.
When set up I compared the overall reach from saddle to bars, compared to my other bike and the scandal was a fair bit shorter, which surprised me really. However, I had heard that longer, slacker bikes feel shorter in the saddle, but are good when out of the saddle.

for me, this ended up being a compromise too far. uphill and along undulating trails, I shift my weight alot along the saddle. I couldn't get comfy uphill, the bike just felt very short. in twisty singletrack I ended up fighting a bike that felt too short, had sluggish steering (I'm sure something I'd adjust to) yet had a tendancy to wander and felt twitchy. Don't know why that would be, but it was similar to my NS.

all in all, it felt like a bit of a handfull.

I can see, for someone more used to that type of geometry and someone who doesn't struggle like me, to find a bike that fits, would get the best from it. I'm just a bit weird.

Thanks for sharing that, useful to know. Surprised to hear it felt short, but can understand how from what you're saying, based on steeper SA. I'm coming from a Parkwood, which although it's a tad too short (because no XL sizes), I really like the ride. I'm interested to see how mine rides when i finally get it built up. My riding is mainly XC/rolling terrain, with little in the way of saddle-dropping downhills. It'll be my first properly LLS bike, so will see how I go.

Think you'll probably like it if you managed to get on a bit with the parkwood. The scandal reach is 480mm while the parkwood was closer to 420 according to geometrygeeks.

I moved from a 445 reach, 72 seat and 70 head angle bike, witha 100mm stem, so quite a change for me. had longer bikes before, but they;ve been hovering around the 69-70 deg head angle, and felt off. for me, somewhere around 67-68 and long would probably feel about right, but it can be dificult tryng lots of bikes out, so take a punt on something and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. (obviously not if you're shelling out £0000's)

If anyone is still thinking of buying a scandal but are waiting for a sale there's now 20% off with build It yourself (express, must be competent) with code PBREXPRESS20.

10% off if not some competent with normal code

I see the carbon whippet is now available on their website... With a selcof carbon fork and the rockshox 35 fork as an extra option, suggesting its suspension corrected for 130mm ish...

So would that selcof fork be a pretty good fit for a scandal?

I cannot see it for sale separately on the website and am keen to try one out if its boost and will take a decent size tyre!

The whippet used to be 100mm travel.

I'd send @brant a message on Monday and ask him.

I'm running a genesis tarn carbon fork on mine and it rides well. You might be able to compare the two?

Thanks I do keep my eyes out for a second hand tarn fork, they seem to be harder to find now!
I've just spotted there "special edition" scandal seems to run the same carbon fork...
I'll ask next week 👍🏽

Ordered my 'paint chipped' scandal for £125 at 6pm on 23rd and it was delivered on the 24th at 9am. Great service 🙂

Anyway, I'm considering forks. Has anyone give at far as 140mm on it?

Running 140 Yari's on mine just whilst my 130 air shaft arrives ( still not ordered one yet!)

Anyone know how to take the rotors off the Scandal?

The fulcrums are centerlock, so you need a bb socket, spanner wont work as the locknut is flush with the disc.

E.g.
https://www.wiggle.co.uk/x-tools-x-tools-pro-shimano-bb-tool/

Edit: theres multiple bb standards now, i think thats the right one and its shimanos newer ones that have an addapter that sits inside it.

If they're centre lock rotors you can use a cassette lockring tool.

Ive managed to mash my bottom cartridge bearing from the zelcof headset I bought with the frame.

I don't fancy paying £40 for another. Can anyone link me to another headset that'll fit the scandal frame?

Thanks

Not on a through axle you cant. Its a hollowtech BB spanner.

ZS56/40

Hope pick and mix part E. Its still £35 or so for just the lower part but will be better sealed.

Keep the selcoff upper part, they have an easier life as theyre not subject to a constant spray of mud.

Alternatively just measure the bearing and get one off ebay for £3 or so. It wont last any longer than the original, but at a few quid a go you can just replace them after each winter.

Ah, I didn't realise that. I've only had centre lock rotors on QR hubs.

@thisisnotaspoon

Thanks, that's actually a good point I can just replace the cartridge bearing. The existing bearing ive thrown it as I managed to completely destroy it.

Do you or anyone know the exact size bottom cartridge bearing? @brant ?

Many thanks

Anyone else having issues with water in the bottom bracket? Mine doesn't have a drain hole. Everytime I put it in a work stand, water drips out the downtube hole for the cables.

Normally I'd drill my own but it might nill the warranty. @brant any suggestions? I've already killed one bottom bracket.

Thanks

A small investment in a mudguard and your bearings will last much longer - especially if you can avoid hosing that area.

I can drop mine out later and have a look. I slathered it in grease so it should be surviving!

@damascus

I've noticed my bottom bracket area is also full of water.

I think it's either coming down the seat post or in the dropper cable hole on the back of the seat tube.

I'm tempted to drill a hole to let it out.

I've covered my seatpost holes in sugru so it's not from there.

I've got some more so I'll fill in some more holes. The only problem is if it still gets in there's no where for it to get out.

Any drilling will void the warranty but I'm still tempted.

Must be the seat tube then as I don't think there is another way in.

Going to try a bit of inner tube over the seat post / seat tube and see if that helps.

How is everyone getting on with their scandal?

I built mine as a winter bike but I'm still riding it. The full suss is moth balled.

Some good offers on at the moment

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/ZXSCANDALCFFS/on-one-scandal-and-selcof-carbon-fork-bundle

Scandal frame and Selcof rigid fork £300

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/ZXSCANDALFS/on-one-scandal-and-rockshox-35-gold-rl-debonair-29-boost-fork-bundle

Or £400 with a rockshox gold fork.

Question about the geometry on these... Might have been answered before, but haven't spotted it...

Is the geometry chart on the website for static or sagged geometry, and is that with a 120 or 130mm fork?

Cheers

@mboy, I don't think that's been asked. Brant would be the one who would know but I don't think he's with px oo anymore.

What size frame you interested in? Maybe one of us could work it out for you?

I'm running a rigid fork so can't help you

Just finished stripping and cleaning my scandal. Took the £13 headset apart and the bearings are absolutely perfect, cleaned them up and put them back in. I only bought the headset to get me going, I never thought it would last a winters riding in Yorkshire grit and getting hosed down after every ride.

My scandal has quickly become my favourite bike.

How has everyone else got on with theirs?

Any would do... Just so I know how it’s been measured really... Easy to compare measures stats against the geo chart.

Didn’t realise Brant had done again! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I refused to trash it in the grit at Swinley over the winter, so it's had a couple of shakedown rides locally and hat's been it! As soon as the weather improved, Swinley shut!

How are people getting on with their Scandals?
Thinking of getting one for general trail duties- bit of XC, bit of singletrack, the odd road section & odd trail center.
I've got a 150mm FS 29er for big days, so this would be the winter/general bike..
