what with all this weather the urge is gradually building.

[*]I live nowhere near a beach[/*]

BUT.....they just look so much fun & idiotic
Have you got it too ?
Go for it (says the guy that sells fat bikes)
My full fat bike gets a lot of use, and you will find that they are rather handy. I take mine on holidays so I can explore the coast, and play in sand dunes.
Forget the snow/beach thing and just ride it anywhere.
I do, but for practical reason IO'm trying to redirect it to a road/CX bike because
That is really the gap in stable
If i buy one it will never snow again.
It would just be another DIA HT (how many does one man need really)
Given the lack of trails where I live a road bike would have a better effect on my fitness.
I bought my first road bike (Trek 1.2) a couple of months back and absolutely love it. It's saved me having to deal with Epping [s]Swamp[/s] Forest this winter.
They're not just for snow.
They are the ultimate getting places bikes, especially when you don't know where the path is going to lead you.
Maybe not ideal for a trail centre with groomed surfaces, but I guarantee you'd still have loads of fun there.
Think of them as an off-piste bike and think of all the places that will take you - even stuff as simple as riding over tussocked grass which is a PITA on an ordinary mtb.
Meanwhile read Fatbikes UK and MTBR fat forum

This^
They're ace, get one! ๐
for where I am the wet peat moors would certainly open up to be a lot more rideable. Normally they are ony accessible under very hard frost or drought.
do it.
if you don't like it (LOL) sell it.
Brant: great pics fella, one question, how is the Fat On One?
Yep itching to get a Fatty here its part of my fitness and losing weight plan for the spring
but I know:it is totally illogical They look that way, turns out they're not. Good all rounder
surely I have missed the winter boat Ridden mine dozens of times, but only ridden in snow twice
I can not possibly justify ano bike Nonsense
I live nowhere near a beach First beach ride last week for me, great fun but probably won't do it very often.
My other bike is a rather nice Tallboy LTc but it hasn't turned awheel since the pufffer. Get the fatbike, if you don't like it it will be an easy sell as fatbike stuff sells out every year.

That Fat bike itch
Research has shown that cases of sexually transmitted disease are significantly higher amongst fatbike owners..
http://benjimedia.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/fatbikes-fad-or-rad/
Big ass tyres donโt seem to deal with hitting rocks at speed very well. And they also seem to be rather prone to โbobbingโ when pedalling along firm surfaces. But the overwhelming revelation I had about fatbikes is that theyโre different. Thatโs the โpointโ of them (if you must find a point to everything).
Thereโs no denying the occasional flashes of 100% glee that their riders have on certain sections of trail. Itโs a type of glee that you donโt ever really achieve (as an adult) on any other type of bike.
So yes they are attention seeking. Yes they are functionally woeful in terms of suspension. Yes they are going to bought by people who spend more time buying bikes than they do riding them.
But they offer a new kind of experience unattainable on any other bicycle. So fair doโs.
@ OP
Did you know.....
is an anagram for....MadBillMcMad
.....i should buy a fat bike.
๐
I'm itching for one now!!!
Note to self: make room in the shed ๐
I reckon they'll be a lot of people buying them and then losing the itch. Probably be a few come up second hand before next winter, at vastly reduced prices. Might be worth waiting.

They said that last year too....
so what are they like in winter mud? Ride in Chilterns and it looks like we're in for mud 6 months/year ๐
tim knows - ive never seen one as muddy as his fatbike !!!!
They absolutely rock in mud. Trust me, it seems to be all I ever ride in ๐
Get some NATES for it and ride it everywhere including the coast ๐
Yup... 4" mud tyres FTW!!
looks like I will have to put it on hold.
Work do the cycle-to-work scheme & the computer-work scheme, but have a rule that you can not do both within 12 months. Looks like I'll have to wait. Well, one person will be happy anyway.
Just supposing I was thinking of getting a fat bike, what's out there ?
Charlie's got a good range, but no single speed.
I'd like to keep it cheap and simple to start, then maybe upgrade later.
Pugsleys have horizontal dropouts and 9:zero:7 do a slidey-dropout version that will also take a belt drive ๐ Sideways Tim would be the man to ask about them.
9:zero:7 with sliding dropouts and a belt drive? Look over there...
I'm liking mine a lot (apart from having to work out a solution to a thorny problem).
EDIT: but it wasn't cheap, although you could ditch the hub gear and won't have to deal with hefty shipping charges.
On-One Fatty is 1k GBP.
I was fat curious but that seems to have passed. If anything, I'm starting to get a bit tri-curious.
Specialised are making a fat bike, therefore they're no longer niche and special, therefore fat bikes are so over........ So glad I didn't get one !!! ๐
