Looking at a shock off a broken frame. The shock hasn't been used for 18 months.
Are there some checks that I can ask the seller to do to check that the rebound and lockout work without being able to mount it to a bike?

I just factor the cost of a service into the price.

Which, in this case would have to be very low if it’s come off a frame that’s had enough hammer to break it.

It'll be pretty hard to check the damping. It can be done on a fork but it's much harder on a rear shock and it's a feel thing so tricky to do remotely. I'd say check it holds air and get lots of close up pictures. If it looks worn it'll probably be worn. If it looks nice then it probably works nicely. Not guaranteed but a start.
