Thinking about next year's holiday and the Jura is a definite candidate. What's the riding like? (Both on and off-road) What are the must-do cols? And what other interesting stuff is there, bearing in mind this is for a family holiday, not bike-specific?

Not my cup of tea. I prefer a Speyside.

Yes, that's why I was having trouble with the search function!

Both disciplines good. Metabief, the old World Cup course, is in the Jura. Used to race out there with Dragon DH. Smallish hills by Alps standards, but still lots of nice stuff. Try Utagawa for GPX files of good routes: http://www.utagawavtt.com/

Mate went there last summer and really enjoyed it.
Had a guy over from the Jura who was working for a month at Lancaster Uni who came out riding with us and he was very weary of slippery rocks and had to unlearn his fear. So the predominant limestone geology does make for slippery going when its wet.

Mmmm love the Jura original not sure about Superstition but by the end of the bottle I might have changed my mind.

But which Jura geographically - the wee Scottish island or the small mountain range on the French eastern border?

We spent a week road riding there a couple of years ago, it was excellent - empty roads & good weather.

Drop me an email if you'd like any info about where we rode.

My family live in vallee de joux in Swiss Jura.

Fantastic cycling and motorcycling on the unsurfaced roads.

Very rarely you will see a prohibition sign the same as in UK (white circle with red border) unlike uk this means no motorvehicles horse or bicycles.

The swiss are very courteous towards cyclists and motorcyclists on the tarmac.

Waymarking is superb. There is also a mobile app (swissmap) which gives you free os type mapping for a limited time.

food etc can be expensive unless you eat simiar food to the natives. Baked beans can cost around £2.50/can but wild boar is cheaper than fillet steak in the UK. As a rule anything you shoot in the forest, catch in the lake or see growing in the local veggie patches will be cheap in the shops.

Accomodation is cheap or stay in one of the mountain huts.

Spares etc fo rbikes are VERY expensive.

Train travel is very expensive as it's not subsidised in some cantons.

Car hire is reasonable and petrol is cheaper than the EU - it's also quicker and more efficient to get around by car than by train.

I've never seen a bus outside of a city!

Been to French Jura a couple of times on family holidays (camping)

Fantastic for both road and mountainbiking and also canoeing/kayaking

I bought a VTT/road bike route guide locally which had about 40 pull out cards with maps and instructions and there are loads of waymarked routes with various lengths and difficulty ratings

very quiet - food good if you like game (I do)
Good fishing and it will be variable weather!

About 300 people & 2000 deer*, 1 road, good fishing & whisky.

Thats all I've heard. (* could be wrong)

If it's the bottled version you're looking for I'd go with the 18 year old - worth the extra few quid.
