If I buy a shifter with an i spec b mounting, will it attach directly to a xt785 brake lever without having to buy anything else?

Yes, provided the brakes are a later model, the first years production were I spec A!

I'm sure they are i-spec b, bought in July so should be.

Should be fine. All the bolts etc. Should come with the shifters.
