Thinking about going to Uni there. What's the riding like? Road and mtb mostly, with a bit of bmx racing now and then.

Anyone from Plymouth will tell you it's shit.

Cycling is excellent in Devon. Close proximity in Exeter to Dartmoor plus good spots nearby at Haldon and Woodbury. The city itself is relatively bike-friendly too, with lots of investment planned by Devon Council. I'm sure there's at least one cycling club and also a mtb club.

It's not as good as Plymouth though.

'kin janners ๐Ÿ˜‰
Will you have a car? if not the riding's limited but not bad, you can get to Haldon, Woodbury & Stoke woods on the bike in half an hour.
If you do then Quantocks, Dartmoor, Exmoor & Shaldon to name a few are all within an hour.

Exeter has a great uni and better access to the best of devon's trails. you'd need a car to get to the really good stuff though. i've lived in both eXeTeR and plymouth and would choose exeter by a country mile.

Exeter is a good place to be a cyclist. Loads of money being spent on cycling in the city. FC spending money at Haldon. Dartmoor, Quantocks, Exmoor just along the road for MTBs. loads of road bike activity around.

Plymouth is a small village down the road, full of scouser junkies

Uni Digs are right next to Stoke woods, some good riding tucked away in there, its a nice ride from Exeter up onto Haldon, ride for a couple of hours, then back along the river.

Some good bike shops, expanding cycle trails, its all positive, ignore the Plymouth scummers, its just jealousy.

With Rex and the others on this one. Exeter is a great place to live.
And there arnt any swills to deal with! I lived in plym for 4 years. Tis ok bit I prefer Exeter.
Good riding close by. Good bmx track that was rebuilt reciently, and jlc trails are good to.
Close to kernow beaches in the summer. No real down sides.

Nah we don't want any Pompey mathematicians down 'ere in Plymuff thank you very much stick with Exeter ๐Ÿ˜‰

You might want to take some extra precautions to secure your bike(s) if you do decide on Exeter. My mate had his shed done over this year & lost his bike, tools & spares, plus there have been a number of other threads on STW regarding bikes stolen in Exeter ..... not that I'm trying to put you off mind.

What happened to your plans to go to Jockland?

"You might want to take some extra precautions to secure your bike(s) if you do decide on Exeter."

Yeah, 'cos Exeter is the only place in the country where bikes get stolen...

having worked in exeter for a while i can assure you its ratio of scummers is on a par with afjannerstan (i love that name!!)

on a more serious note it is a nice enough place to live and the facilities for cycling are slightly better (the bmx track for one and skate park by the river!!) than plymski (although from my house i can cycle to dartmoor in less than 20mins)

2/ likewise ...Shaldon...?

3/ I'm tired and probably being thick but can't suss "Afjannerstan" ...could somebody explain the meaning/joke as i'm frustrated it doesn't click

thanks
Billyboy

kaiser, 'janner' is a term for the ruling classes of plymouth.

shaldon across from teignmouth? it's quite steep, I reckon there's space in the woods for some nice short singletrack. Only a guess though.

kaiser - I think its a naval term from way back, like matlow - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=matlow

I believe it defines a person as residing on the coast. I could be wrong though. If you look janner up in a dictionary, there should be a picture of Fatmuthahubbard. He's proper Plymuff, innit!

I was in Exeter with the missus today and must concede that is is a nicer place than Plymouth, although it's too far from the beach for my liking. Plymouth has the best balance of all the things that are important to me, which is why I'm moving back there asap.

Putting things in a different perspective, I'd much rather live in Exeter than That London.
