[#4349752]

The chilly breeze this morning reminded me that it's almost time to get bikes ready for winter. Unfortunately, that got me taking my DT front hub apart (new bearings time after "summer"). I'm used to the usual 9mm QR front hubs where it's just a case of tapping the bearings out - does anyone have an idea how to get these out though?

[EDIT - i suck at linking to photos - picasa album here: https://picasaweb.google.com/116972835467161241633/11September2012?authkey=Gv1sRgCI2m65yyyMn_0wE# ]

The photos are pretty crap, but the problem is basically that there's nothing to tap! The bearings seem to sit on the end of the axle, and there doesn't seem to be any way to get a drift (read screwdriver) down the axle to tap them out. Help STW gurus!

Why don't you call them?
The french SAV center is pro1 europe. So they might be able to help you.

And following their logic of recruitment, they should speak perfect english.

Good point - why didn't i think of that?! I suspect my schoolboy French probably isn't up to technical directions over the phone - maybe i'll go for the "Brits abroad" approach :S.

Is the tube inside the hub just a spacer that pan be worked out of the way to get the opposite side bearing?
Some hope's have this set up and it's just a matter of getting the internal tube out of the way enough to get the drift on the opposite side bearing.
Might be different on DT's but maybe worth a look

look here, starting at page 23 ..

http://www.dtswiss.com/Resources/Support/HUBS/DT-Swiss-Hubs-240s-Technical-Manual

for some tasks you need a special "dt swiss tool", (which is nearly impossible to buy..) but as far as I remember you need it only only for the rear hub disassembling..

accu, the DT tool you speak of is available from any bike shop with a Madison account. I ordered one from the shop I used to work in & arrived in two days. Hardly almost impossible to buy.

It looks from thoes pictures as though alanf has it, there looks to be none of the centre tube inside the id of the bearing. It should just push down at the edge enough for you to get your highly calibrated drift on the inside of the bearing an knock it out.

All sorted now thanks chaps. Turns out that alanf was right - there are a couple of thick black o-rings that sit between the axle and the hub shell - if you push hard enough, you can move the axle to the side and then get the bearings out (bit of a faff). Once that's done, it's a simple case of using your favourite drift to hammer some new bearings in! It's a shame none of this is mentioned in the tech manual you linked to accu!

Oh, and accu - the tool you need is the star-ratchet lockring tool - it enables you to get to the 4th bearing in the rear hub, the one inside the shell on the drive side. You can get them on ebay too, if you need one, i will have a spare in about a week's time (i have a load of drifts coming for DT hubs that come with another one as part of the kit!) - drop me an email if you need one!
