Those mavic cars have full bikes on them. Has anyone ever used one in the race, I've never seen it.

Thats not actually one of them. That was a spare bike from a kids race forward to about 45 seconds in:

Someone I know had to use one for the Haute Route when his bike broke before the first stage. Mavic were providing mechanical + spare bike support and they lent him it for the week.

It was a Cannondale CAAD10, painted yellow.

That is one of my favourite Jens stories. Absolute legend.

I've seen wheels being used, but can't remember bikes too often.

Do they have a big box of pedals in the Mavic car too?

I've often wondered about pedals too but as no one seems to ride them does it matter. What about wheels are they all compatible?

They're all clip and strap pedals...

the wheels aren't all the same - some will have campag cassettes (11sp) and some shimano (even if the neutral service is shimano)

On what are you basing this?

Thanks, after a quick poke about, it seems you have the choice of either LOOK or these;

Because of all of the different clipless pedal options, spare bikes come equipped with toeclips and straps

No pedals on the bikes:

(EDIT) OK, sometimes pedals on the bikes! Makes more sense.

I'm sure I've heard it in various commentary interludes when the action is lacking, then a quick google seems to throw up enough confirmations. Admittedly not from mavic themselves.

Thats 7 years out of date though. I've never see anyone use one so we'll never know!! Suppose they might have a pedal spanner in the car and cojld swap your pedals on. Edit pic above seems to confirm this.
