Got a Yeti ASR 5 on order which has a tapered headtube. I was going to order a Rockshox Revelation U-turn to go with it but have found that version only comes with a straight steerer. My question is do the stiffness benefits come from
a) the headtube itself, in which case using a straight steerer with a reducer headset would give the same benefits
b) the tapered steerer on the fork, in which case the tapered headtube will have no benefit without a tapered fork to go with it.

I am tending to think that it is b) that flex in the front end is mainly in the steerer crown joint. Any views?

a combination of the two,

big tubes give a bigger weld area so the join is stiffer, and big head tube allows a big downtube and the bigger tubes are inheerently stiffer anyway.

Same for the steerer.

Thats why DH frames normaly have 1.5" headtubes but run 1.125" steerers.

IIRC Brant has said it's the ability to run mahoosive down tubes that's the benefit.

2nd the headtube as being the biggest benefit. a tapered steerer will help, but not as much.
