Asking on behalf of a friend who has a 2014 Trek Fuel ex8 29er.

He has just purchased some forks for it which are a straight steerer and he is going to replace the headset at the same time with a new one. The bike is only a run about really and doesn't see any proper use.

Could anyone point me in the direction of a cheap headset which would allow the straight steerer to run with this tapered headtube?

Yes a 1 1/8 but in a tapered headtube.

Would the above work with the current headset or do you need to replace the lower with a Hope one?

Works with the current headset.

The existing crown-race fits over that adapter.
