whats all this with tapered forks i suddenly see everywhere?

why would i want/need one and what benefit do they supposedly give?

I think this is a valid question....

Plenty of crap coming from bike companies. Marketing budgets are huge in comparison with development.

Its a bit like 650b - supposed to be stiffer that 1 1/8th standard steerer, yet without the weight of a 1.5 steerer.

All very marginal I suspect

tapered forks give very little benifit imo - tapered headtubes on the other hand....

The 'load' is greatest at the bottom of the headtube so a bigger more robust size will stiffen the area and will less likely fail.

The rest of the steerer can be tapered as there is less load towards the top and also keeps weight down.
