Anyone doing this and have some real experience?

Been reading on the Zwift site about how it can be done with either cadence or power meter and an ANT dongle. Seems to work ok but you don’t have the smart resistance control.

Is it worth updating the Fortius just for these smart features?

Thing is if I went the power meter way I’d have to spend more than simply buying the cheapest smart trainer option like a Tacx Vortex Smart!

zwift's fine with a "dumb" trainer - you can still ride with anyone else, it's just different. You don't get the surges of resistance and they do lead to surges in power output, say at the beginning of a hill where smart trainer riders seem to pull away a bit. You get your own back at the crest though as they often drop their power while yours will be stable.

You can replicate "smartness" to an extent by changing up a gear or two as the hill starts; it's not "the same" but it's close enough in feel

If you end up buying a fancy trainer you could sell the old one and speed sensor as a "zwift-ready" pair ?

Fortius (I-magic??) is not supported, which is annoying and down to Tacx. I've always found the Tacx software to be unreliable and it seemed like Tacx stopped support just after I bought it, granted the trainer only gets used a small amount in winter so it may just seem that way.
