Just wondering if the Sustrans C2C is the one talked about in mags, or is there another more off-road one as well?

And anyone done it - what's it like?

thanks

Did it on Saturday ๐Ÿ™‚

There is a proper off road one which goes to Whitby I think. The Sustrans C2C isn't really mountainbiking - more minor roads and cyclepaths, old railways and such like. It's good though. The pennines were a bit misty for us but that made it cooler thankfully. Wouldn't have been easy today!

paul4stones - did you do it all in 1 day? that's quite good going

thinking of doing it with Scouts aged 11 - 14, over 4 to 5 days. Am I mad? What are the climbs like?

cheers

Yes. It was easy ๐Ÿ˜‰

I met a family descending Hartside a couple of years ago. They were doing it over 5 days to raise money for breast cancer research because the mother had had cancer. The youngest of them was 10 I think so on that basis those Scouts should be ok on 5 days. It might depend how much support you have to carry luggage, etc. We didn't carry anything.

The climbs are ok. Hartside is the longest but not too steep - we did the bottom bit of the offroad alternative because it cuts out a descent to Renwick. The top bit of that offroad section is great fun down!

The climb out of Garrigill is a pig - steep and seemingly never ending (probably because it just disappeared into the mist). The offroad bit up Rookhope incline is also quite tough but like all the climbs when going W>E is short and sharp rather than long and drawn out. Once you're at the top of there it's a blast downhill for the next 40 miles more or less!

Good luck if you do it.

We did it with 10 and 12 year old kids in 5 days with no problems. In fact I think the kids could have done it in three, it was the old woman who was the limiting factor--she won't do more than 30 miles a day max and matha will reveal a lot of the days were much shorter
