I need a new set of forks for my Ventana X-5 as my old forks have developed some play in the legs and think it's really time to upgrade/change rather than a rebuild.
I've been offered a set of 06 Marzocchi All Mountain II for around £130 but would (eventually) prefer some RS Pike/Revelation or Fox with 140mm+ travel.
Of course the RS or Fox forks would be ideal, but do people think the Marzocchi would be a good 'stop gap' or should I save my notes and wait?
Cheers!
If you can make sure that they they are the 'old made in Italy?' forks then go for it. They'll beat most modern forks - so I'm constantly told. I think Marz went wrong somewhere a few years ago but they're back on track now. That leaves a gap that you shouldn't touch from about 08 - 10. Just guessing on those dates but someone on here will know the specifics.
Good luck, whatever you get mate.
I've heard that before about the Marzocchi, anybody got more info on the 06? I've read that the 06 Marz AM II were the 'weak' point when fitted to higher end bikes though. Anybody have experience of them? How about compared to the Revelation/Pike?
PeterPoddy is really your man. I seem to remember some of the fancier Marzocchi damping was unreliable (TST or similar) on certain years.
Looking at the 2006 AM2, it seems like a fairly basic Marzocchi fork - SSV with ETA and adjustable travel. It's not got the fancy HSCV innards or anything. It should last forever given an oil change now and then.
That said, I'd probably just go for a second hand set of Rockshox. As I understand it, Motion Control is a fair bit superior to your basic Marzocchi Bomber SSV / orifice damping. You won't have to spend much more, and you'll have a far more up to date fork. You might not even bother going for another upgrade.
The other option would be one of the Marzocchi forks with the HSCV kit, which are still fairly sought after.
They sound over priced for what they are. Ive seen plenty of sets of Rock Shox Pikes for sale for a similar amount, and they're newer than 2006!
Thanks for your feedback, it's pretty much what I thought. Some of the Marz AM II have gone for sub £100 so, in my opinion, they are over priced for what they are, especially for their age. I think I will wait on for some RS Pikes (as they seem to go for well below £150) or some Revelations or similar. Cheers.
