I've bought a surly chain tug and wondered if I'm meant to still use the little spring that you get on a QR axle on the side that the chain tug fits as it has to compress so flat for the locking nut to sit flush against the chain tugg .hope this makes sence

Yes, you still use both the springs on your qr skewer.
If that's what you mean?
