My Sun Ringle Abbah has recently developed a slight problem - when pedalling up a hill it makes a sort of 'pinging' sound like something is giving slightly.

My guess is it's to do with the pawls on the freehub body, but it's also been suggested that it could be the cassette moving on the freehub body (freehub is a little notched, but not too bad - cassette is a SRAM PG980).

I've had a look round on the web & sun's website, but can find no guides on how to disassemble the hub.

Anyone ever taken one of these apart & able to offer a guide/some tips?

Thanks

I have a knackered Sun Ringle Demon that I needed to take apart to replace the bearings. I gave up after drawing a blank on instructions and reading that you needed a special tool to disassemble.

Yeah, it's mostly straightforward. From memory there's a locknut that you'll need a thin cone spanner to slacken off at the freehub end of the axle with a 5mm (I think) allen key inside the other end of the axle to hold it. Sorry, can't remember the size of the cone spanner, but it's pretty obvious once the cassette's off the freehub body.

Looks something like this:

You need spanner that'll sit on the indented flat, if that makes sense. Once you've removed it, the freehub body'll just pull off and you can replace, clean, whatever the pawls and springs / change the bearings.

The locknut thing wears eventually, so you may need a new one. The rest is pretty obvious from memory. The pawls and springs are bog standard. There's also a tubular spacer in the freehub, again nothing unusual. You don't need special tools, CRC stock some of the spares, but I'm pretty sure I got some bits direct from the distributor a few years back.

Keep your fingers crossed it's not a freehub bearing (non replaceable)

On the upside you can buy a complete new hub for the price of a Sun Freehub

Thanks for all the help - hope to have this sorted by the end of the weekend.

What kind of bearings do the freehubs run and is there anyway to use something else?
