Can this work with a std long cage xt / SLX shadow rear mech?

Shimano specs says max difference is 39 (so 11-50 should work on a 1 x 11)

But then it says maximum sprocket size 42 ....

TBH the 46 Sun-Race will be fine - but can I go11-50?

Max. sprocket size is a function of the parallelogram not the cage length.

Cage length simply allows more or less chain to be accounted for, what you need is more range of movement to allow for a larger sprocket.

In practice a longer b screw gives the extra range by moving the whole mech outwards but does so at the expense of accurate and responsive shifting.

From memory the review of the sunrace 50 cassette on here mentioned problems with a shimano mech, but i may be making that up.

Yes I’ve been using it with long cage XT m8000 for  almost 1 year now.

working perfectly well with a medium cage M8000 XT mech on my son's transition scout.  Just had to adjust B-screw and cable tension a bit.

Initially I couldn’t get it to shift into the 50 but after much frustration sorted it. Turns out I needed to remove the top link (not sure exactly what it’s called) off the mech as didn’t realise my frame uses a direct mount derailleur hanger...in fact I’d never heard of one! Once that got sorted and mounted the derailleur without that link, it been perfect. Shifts great and been flawless really.

If you Google my name you'll see a big long thread I started about that cassette and all the mechs I tried on it.

Basically I only got it to work in the end with a medium cage XT mech. Ymmv.

okay ... need to buy a new rear mech anyway ....

Do I need a goat link? (something I new knew existed ....

I run a 11-46 on a PP Oka with no problem

And a 11-42 of a Gen 2 Solaris, with no problem .... but this is becoming the donor bike for a Flare Max

Can't say I know on that one mate.

I can addy the 11-50 caused me problems where an 11-46 worked no problems. That extra 4 teeth proved a real problem

I think I tried 3 mech in the end and the only one that worked well (or at all) was the XT med.

It was worth the hassle though, the range is rather good.😊

I went with the 5ft sgs cage as that was the one surface website says works with it.

Chain length will depend on chainstay length amongst other things.

I could get a GS XT to work on the 50T on an Aeris but couldnt then get the 11T as the body would hit the chainstay pivot.

Think I was trying it with a goatlink thingy to get it to reach the 50T so going to try an SGS without.

The 11-50T is 39T difference which is the maximum stated capacity of the GS but chain growth means you need a greater capacity and the mech was really at it's limits so the SGS should be fine.

The SLX M7000 GS is kind of in between the XT GS and SGS with something like 41 or 42T vs 39 and 46T from memory.
