Suggest a dropper post for me please.

[#12933108]

I'm on an Ebike nowadays, a Trek Rail that came with a Bontrager Line Elite dropper that needs replacing. I cannot stand in the pedals due to my arthritic hip so I ride sitting down all the time, whatever the terrain.

I think I need a tougher post to support 105kg of me as I clatter my way up, down and around the hills and trail centers; the Bonty post just isn't robust enough for my riding style. If I could change my style I would- but I cannot.

Can anyone suggest a suitable post for me please?

Dunno if CRC are doing any deals on their Brand X posts at the mo, you could use one with the remote off your Bonty post.

Or OneUp are the go-to reasonably affordable option, which seem to last well. And they have a low stack height so can drop further in the same space.

I have a 170mm 31.6mm OneUp V1 dropper in my spares I've been meaning to sell, in case that might do the job?

£83 or so for the 150mm brand X.... I've now got 2!

I'm in the same weight range as you and I am out of the saddle as little as possible. I've destroyed a few dropper posts over the years. I tend to blow the seals and they spaff their guts over the seat tube.

I've now had a Brand X on the bouncy bike for about 4-5 years and its still absolutely spot on

Thanks so much folks. One thing I forgot to add is that I'm quite tall, I'm 6'2", 1.88 m. I'm using Trek's recommended size frame but I wonder about the flex and wear caused by the length of the post, esp the upper post. Opening it up I can see a deep groove worn around the base of the upper tube. The lower bush is surprisingly short/ small/ un-robust.

I figure that there is a lot leverage at play here, esp with my riding style so perhaps big fat bushings and guides are a component of what I'm seeking.

Bikeyoke make the best quality droppers ime, but they're stupidly expensive and whether it really translates into being better with your concerns I couldn't tell you. I do love mine but when I needed another post I never even considered it, went direct to Oneup.

In that regard would a longer travel dropper that is never at full extension mean more overlap better support?

That's an awesome idea. I like your thinking. Does such a thing exist?

I'll need to find a tape measure I think.

You could space a OneUp down in 10mm increments up to 20mm which would give more bushing overlap, but also kind of defeat the purpose of low stack height.

I'm running a 210 and it's fantastic.

You could run a 210 at 200 or 190, or a 180 at 170 or 160, etc. depending on space and all that.

Impressed with the Cannondale Downlow on my Moterra. They're not too pricey either

Try any of the PNW posts - I have a cascade on my hardtail and its been faultless for 6 years despite everything being chucked at it. Pretty good price wise as well

If you're sat down the whole time, do you need a dropper post?

I’ve had good experiences with both Planet X (old bike) and One-Up droppers (new bike).

Why would you not want one? Your still drop the centre of gravity on your bike, so it handles better than it would otherwise. I regularly happily ride my bike with the dropper post down, & sat in the saddle, it feel like a big BMX.

To the OP, maybe check out the Brand-X Ascend XL, as it has the bigger shaft diameter than the std version. Otherwise the Brand X Ascend or X-Fusion Manic do the job and are reliable for not a lot of money

Well we might have a winner here, but now I'm getting confused about insertion depths and stuff.

My frame has a max insertion depth of 31.0 Cm. I like the look of the Brand X Ascend XL 200 but cant work out if it will fit my frame. My ride height is 263mm

I also like the One up V2, according to the on-line calculator I need the 210 version.

Aargh! Decisions, decisions.

There is a significant problem with most people's suggestions here...

Bontrager Line Elite dropper

Brand-X Ascend

These posts are the same post, just slight detail differences and rebranding... Also see TranX, Whyte, Merida and god knows how many other OEM posts...

No such thing as a bombproof dropper post sadly. They all have their issues. Pick the one with the most cast iron warranty and be prepared to use it! That's why I was happy to stick with Reverbs for so long until SRAM stopped replacing them automatically and started asking questions about the posts history... Since been using Fox Transfers which aren't cheap, but have proven more reliable than most, and when I have had to use the warranty process it has been cast iron to be fair.

Do you actually adjust this on the fly whilst riding? If you don't, save a tonne of hassle, cost and maintenance by just buying a non dropper post

I adjust the height frequently on every ride. Don't you?

A tonne? I would say a few grams, at worst. Cheap droppers like the Band X or Trans X are almost entirely maintenance and hassle free.

Maybe not, but Bikeyoke are as close as you're going to get. I'm well north of 100KG and run them on all my bikes for exactly that reason.

By far the sturdiest and easiest to live with Droppers I've found and also the easiest to service at home.

I don't like 'disposable' things so their whole ethos appeals to me but yes, not cheap.

I do, but not seated, hence my question. My saddle is either fully up and seated or fully down and I'm standing. I can't picture adjusting the saddle for seated riding hence the question.

But yeah, one-up promoted using a longer drop dropper at lower extension for heavier riders, so one of them

Riding an ebike I'll tend to have my saddle at all sorts of heights. It's quite pleasant riding along at half mast sometimes, cruiser style.

I've just installed a 180mm one-up and I'd say it's probably the best seatpost I've had so far

Paired it with a Hope lever

Just picked up a new fox transfer performance elite for £160. Sorry its not a psa, and less that the length you wanted(150mm)  but im just too happy about it not to share, and given I was considering a brand X which would have been £110.

OneUp dropper arrived yesterday, the ability to add extra travel keys was the deciding factor.

Many thanks for all your advice folks.
