Sambob Im sure we could figure something out. I was worried about legalities (responsible adult) but Pook could fit that criteria.

The way I see it sam, you've been on a couple of our rides - you know the way we do things, how to prepare and what to expect. As long as you're happy to look after yourself alongside the rest of us, I (and I suspect most others) are happy for you to come.

I think the fact that he's asked and not just turned up unaccompanied shows the fella probably has more sense than a lot of us anyway.

sambob- back the screws on the spds right off and ride on the road on them as much as possible. I hated mine when I first tried it. Now I wouldnt be without my Shimano DX's.

Size 44. You really need to try them on first though as you might find one size actually fits better. I had to fit shoe inserts into my Specialized Sport MTB spd shes as I had heel-lift (like snowboard boot slip) to ensure I had a snug fit.

Also- have you bought your spds yet? Shimano DX's offer a stable and confidence inspiring 'trainer' spd for nervous first timers.... I binned two sets of standard spds before I came across DX's. Ive been on the same DX pedals/bearings for the past 4-5yrs.

13 years on my dx too, they weigh almost as much as the rest of my bike but the new ones are much lighter and I find being clipped in much better for power. you just need to think ahead slightly ready to clip out when you first get them then its second nature

i fear they might be out of my budget.

Honestly speak to your Dad on these (he'll hate me for saying this!). Its worth the outlay as they will last years.

Some may disagree but for me- its the perfect 'learner' spds that are also make great DH'er spds for better riders. Basically you are entering a technical section and dont want to be clipped in with one foot- you can rest your foot on the plastic cage whereas normal spds you are 'perched' precariously/contact point pivots in a way.

" new ones are much lighter "
They're still 568g and cost £45+ wheres M520s are 380g and can be got for as little as £18 (inc. cleats)

"also make great DH'er spds for better riders. Basically you are entering a technical section and dont want to be clipped in with one foot- you can rest your foot on the plastic cage"
That sounds like you haven't actually 'learnt' to use SPDs properly?

It depends on whether you use 'racer style' stiff soled shoes or not, if you do then you really shouldn't need a cage, if not (depending on the stiffness of the more casual/hiking style shoe as to whether a cage type pedal would help support your foot a bit better. (I use my spesh tahoes on M520s without any problems. The sole is perhaps stiffer than some, but still flexy compared to experts or sports)

Those pedals are the same price on Merlins 'real' website too (inc. postage) as well btw

I don't think that's fair - I sometimes (when I had a cage) used to use it for precisely this, despite being able to clip in and out at will. I suppose it could explain why I'm always wikkid to the power of rad through techy sections....

:o)

Oh, so you can... http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/m424-pedals-3884482/ Proper bargain

Is that backed up by anything? Or is it said anywhere else? Do you have a link to where that came from? because i have a stiff soled shoe and i've found the cage to be very helpful when not clipped in.

Oh come on, I was merely suprised at one line on a councils website constituted law. I didn't mean to come across as questioning you personally (not sure this is reading properly either), so sorry If I did

Surely (one of) the point(s) of SPDs is the extra pedal security. If you're unclipping in the most techincal situations (where its needed most) then you'd be better off with some grippy flat pedals in this instance?
Just my opinion

most people, in my opinion, cant transfer straight from flats to spd so why not have both? in my opinion i prefer both even though i'm so used to riding clipped in when i'm unclipped feels wrong, in my opinion.

Remember when planning this route we need to have access for Skiprat to follow in the support van with your large screwdriver.

Has anyone mentioned a start time, can we do it in the morning so those of us dragging SO's behind us can get some afternoon delight in at the hotel afterwards?
