Is it at all practical to have a Brompton to take with you on business trips? I'm likely to be spending a fair amount of time on the road, with frequent trips to Barcelona, Paris and Noo Yoik at the very least. Found myself pondering a Brompton to take with me, as I think it would be rather a nice way to spend time in a city, dashing about and seeing more of it than on foot.

Is this at all practical? Anyone have any experience of flying with a Brompton? I fly BA almost exclusively so I'll have no problem packing enough in my hand baggage allowance (2 bags, one being a laptop bag/rucksack, one wheeled Samsonite) to allow me to put it in the hold.

Any thoughts?

The classic steel one can be a bit of a heft if you're going to be lugging it around airports/hotels for any period of time. If you do go for one then the 2spd titanium is a must ๐Ÿ™‚

Well Paris and Barcelona have hire-bike schemes so why not just subscribe to those ๐Ÿ™‚

In Nooo Yoik just eat hot dogs and drink cocktails.

Not sure how you'd get in with US immigration/customs. I got pulled out of line for carrying a tape measure once.

I had to show them that it worked. So we measured things.

No reason why not but to make it practical I think you'd want either a small hard box with wheels to pop it so you could roll like a case of have a bag made up to sling it over your shoulder comfortably.
How about a hard case to put it in that converts to a trailer to tow your luggage at your destination?

Have you seen the Barcelona hire bikes?

Oh, and a Brompton would allow me to play up to a few sterotypes, which is always fun! (Bowler hat, pinstripe, etc ๐Ÿ™‚ )

I commute between London and Malaga 4 times a month, sometimes with a Brompton.

I take a 15" MacBook Pro and a weeks worth of clothes.

The official Brompton suitcase bag (for the bike) is pretty cool because it has wheels, for the minimal time you drag the bike-in-bag around and you can roll it up and take it along on the bike. It also has space for the 'S' bag to go inside on top of the bag.

I have sometimes got as far as Clapham Junction and the trains to Richmond aren't running (too late), so I put the 'S' bag on the front, Timbuk2 on my back and the Brompton suitcase rolled up on the top of the 'S' bag and ride off through the city. It's quite liberating.

Bit off the original question, but take a read of Bicycle Diaries by David Byrne [the Talking Heads guy], who travels with a folding bike to mooch around the places he goes to. Not much on the bike itself, but interesting insights into the places, including NYC.
