This is why I'm always skint. My bike was making an unpleasant noise from the front end last time I was out on it, so I stripped it down last night to see what the problem was. Out of the bottom of the headset dropped a kind of mush of bearings, grit and bits of bearing cage.

Brilliant.

Thought 1: New bearings. But the headset's pretty rubbish, and it's been on a couple of years. Leading to:

Thought 2: New headset. Big Fat Pig is £35 - that'll do the job. But if I borrow the tools to change the headset, I might as well change the one on my other bike too - I need to swap from one frame to another. Leading to:

Thought 3: If I'm swapping headsets over, I might as well build the new frame up. I mean, I wanted to get it done by the end of April, and I need to get used to it properly before the Glentress Enduro in May. Now, I don't need to buy a new headset, but I WILL need new gear cables - nice set of XTR ones for £18 from CRC. Great. But dammit, the chain on my hardtail is pretty short, I'll probably need a new one of those too. And if I get a new chain I'll need a new cassette too. Good deal on SRAM PG971 bits from Merlin - £35.

So what I was anticipating as being a quick strip and regrease ended up costing me £53, and no doubt I'll need some other bits as I'm building up the new one too. AND I just bought Futureheads tickets.

On the plus side, hopefully will be out on the Hemlock this weekend 😀
