[#3084456]

hello gents. first time poster, please be gentle.

i don't really do forums but i was hoping to get some first hand experience about a bike i'm looking at but have a few reservations about.
i can have a brand new 2011 stumpjumper evo for £2000 (reduced from £3000) which has swayed me from "that's a bloody nice bike" to "i could have that right now!".
i've ridden a few spesh demo bikes but not the evo and to be honest i loved them. i tried the enduro which i thought was my kind of bike (emphasis on DH style hooligan behaviour) and then the stumpjumper which was lighter and faster in most places and surprisingly every bit as fun and capable in the rough stuff. considering the bike will spend 90% of its time in britain and not the alps the stumpy is probably the more useful bike. but i reckon the evo is the perfect middle ground.
one thing i'm not sure about is the reliability of the fox suspension. i know they work beautifully when new but i occasionally work at a mates bike shop and i see a massive amount of horrible, knackered fox forks and shocks. i don't mind a bit of DIY servicing but i don't want to be sending them to mojo and paying big bills every few months.
and roval wheels? never heard of them. i'm wondering if they'd be easy to pass on via ebay or something since i've got some lovely newish hope hoops that i'd rather use.

basically, i just want to know anything about them and i'd love to hear from anyone who's riding one. is there any other similar lightweight/hooligan hybrid that i could consider for the same price?

cheers

I thought the evo had fox suspension?
Roval are spesh's in house wheel company. Pretty good by all accounts.

Mate has one, he's very happy with it. Nice & plush, with good angles. He rides it XC and also rode it in the Mega Avalanche, good all rounder. The wheels are not so good - pretty much every other ride he breaks a spoke nipple, but this is because they are alloy so he's slowly replacing them with stainless steel as they break. Strangely only the front wheel is a problem.

The fox suspension has been fine, I have similar Fox forks & shock on my bike and have had a lot of use and not had any problems...yet. Replaced the seals and done an oil change once (both very easy), and lube the foam rings every couple of months, again very easy. The rear shock has some sort of Spesh specific mount so I don't know how easy it would be to but a different shock on if you wanted to upgrade / change to a coil etc.

Nice bike, for 2k i'd go for it. Remember you also get the excellent Spesh warranty.

thanks for that review link. it pretty much confirms what i was imagining/hoping the bike would be like.
i think the roval wheels and command seatpost might go straight on ebay but apart from that it looks damn good.

I've had one since last year

Main points

Like the geometry but mainly suited to rougher tracks and technical trail riding, 150mm travel and slacker angles means overkill for general XC riding

Wheels are fine and I haven't needed to replace or true any spokes, they are a little narrower than Flow rims but only by 3-4mm. Hubs seem good and haven't needed any attention

Command post very good but did need a new clamp due to slipping, faultless since then though

Only parts changed us tyres & shorter stem

For £2k or even the full price of £3k it's fantastic value and a great bike, whether to buy one or not depends what you intend to use it for.

sounds perfect. i'm only recently embracing XC riding and trail centres as a way of spending more time actually riding. but having a lot of downhill experience has me looking for a bike that will keep the speed high in what i consider to be the fun parts of the trail and a 'proper xc bike' just doesn't do it.
well i can't see any other full bikes that tick all the boxes that the evo does. especially not for £2000. i might report back here in a few days when it's home in my garage!

You should get £200-£300 if you sell the wheels on without using them.

Fox suspension is generally pretty reliable IME. If you see a lot of knackered shocks and forks in your mate's shop it might be because Fox dominate the mid/high-end OE market for bikes.

Not ridden a Stumpy Evo but they look very promising, my main reservation would be that it comes with a 15mm axle fork rather then a 20mm one - but you could always change the fork later if you felt the need.

I've got bikes with 20mm axle and don't find I big difference with 15mm

Why sell the wheels ? Can't understand the need to change parts that aren't knackered

For £2k its a bargain but they have upgraded it for 2012 with a carbon frame , kashima rear shock, 142mm rear end, shorter stem and wider bars. Will probably be more than £3k rrp tho.

They're still doing an Expert alu version at about 3000 with the new tweaks for 2012. They're also doing the alu frame only with command seat post. Interested to see what price that is if they bring it to UK.
